This book snuck up on me as I read it, getting better and better and going up and up in my estimation. It is a story of Craig, a 15 year old boy in Brooklyn who gets into a highly competitive high school and just can't take the strain, and his descent into enervating depression. At his absolute bottom, he checks himself into the hospital due to "suicidal ideation" and spends 5 days in the psychiatric ward, where he begins to come back to a reality where he doesn't have to become the person he thinks he must become. Sounds depressing, but it really isn't. The people on the ward are lovingly depicted, and Craig is a decent and likable narrator. At times, it is tempting to look at this book as a smug five days with the lovable loonies, but Vizzini - who spent the exact same amount of time in a psychiatric ward in 2004 - matter of factly shows the pain of Craig's fellow patients along with their loopy humanity. If you stick with this book, it will reward you. Terrific for older YA's and adults.

Great read! I loved this book, but I admit it took me a little while to really get into it (30-50 pages). I think this is because of the language used. Not foul language, but it written in (what I would call) a backwoods dialect. For instance, being afraid was called afeared, and the word "for" was fer. Once I found a rhythm, I was able to pick up the pace in my reading and really enjoy the book.

I first read this book as a secondary school student of 14. At the time, too young to understand some of the things. I re-read this book later about the age of 21-22, and many things were different - I could understand some of the subtleties, the nuances which Kazuo Ishiguro puts up so well. I learnt that even though it seems like its too late.. we can still do something with our lives. It might not be what we wanted, but as long we give it a try, hey, it might just work out for us.

Pure storytelling populated with characters you will come to love. Markus Zusak is rightfully lauded for his work here painting real characters. The squat, cardboard faced Rosa. Lemon haired and defiant Rudy who paints himself black in homage to Jesse Owens, Liesel the book thief and so many more. Loved this book.

I don't know. There are some intriguing mysteries and characterizations but it didn't strike me. I will keep going with the series and see how I feel. It feels like King trying to write a Gene Wolfe story.
