Through verse, Judy Sierra tells the classic story of hubris and nemesis, this time in the third grade. The main character, afraid of losing in the science fair decides to cheat. In the quest for an easy win, she unleashes a green hungry blob who soon has devoured her cat, father, and class. Can she stop her monster before it is too late? Gammell's illustrations bring to life to Sierra's humorous verse. The paintings are watercolors and the colors bleed together just as the monster oozes from scene to scene. It's the perfect blending of talents.

Rafael Lopez rafaelgainzalopez — My first Johanna Lindsey book, one of her earliest novels, and it shows. Although it has a great, readers' hook prologue, the writing throughout the book was often stilted. The couple, a young woman running an entire ranch by herself in Wyoming country after the death of her domineering father and a man who is a friend of the heroine's estranged mother, exude chemistry and while their bickering is very entertaining, the constant fighting and misunderstandings between them start to take their toll. I like Jessie and Chase together very much, but it is often difficult to see where the love is. I especially struggled with Jessie. She is difficult and stubborn to a fault with almost everyone, which is tough to get through at times. And while I loved the western setting, complete with cattle trails and saloons, the ending seemed tacked on and rushed. More polishing would have made this solid story much better.
