John Zerfas zerfas — This book snuck up on me as I read it, getting better and better and going up and up in my estimation. It is a story of Craig, a 15 year old boy in Brooklyn who gets into a highly competitive high school and just can't take the strain, and his descent into enervating depression. At his absolute bottom, he checks himself into the hospital due to "suicidal ideation" and spends 5 days in the psychiatric ward, where he begins to come back to a reality where he doesn't have to become the person he thinks he must become. Sounds depressing, but it really isn't. The people on the ward are lovingly depicted, and Craig is a decent and likable narrator. At times, it is tempting to look at this book as a smug five days with the lovable loonies, but Vizzini - who spent the exact same amount of time in a psychiatric ward in 2004 - matter of factly shows the pain of Craig's fellow patients along with their loopy humanity. If you stick with this book, it will reward you. Terrific for older YA's and adults.

Duncan Brazzil designbyduncan — good jokes, especially in the disclaimer, which makes light of the fact that the subject of the book is illegal. the book sold me with the quote on the front: "every red-blooded american should hop a freight at least once in his life". sounds right to me. problem is it seems to be best suited for not the rookie freighthopper, but more the intermediate, with some knowledge of railroading. the terminology was not all that clear, and i want to be convinced that there's no need to sissy out at the last second.

Ian Challo _an_hallo — Stevenson's classic novella has excellent name recognition nearly 150 years after it was written, but his story bears little resemblance to the pop cultural vision of Jekyll and Hyde. It's not surprising that this book has been reimagined - it's a Victorian morality tale, really a vignette, and not something that would lend itself easily to a comic book. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde has the structure of a typical mystery from its period, which involves a lot of boring build-up before a straightforward reveal, but it makes up for that with beautiful language and an idea with obvious enduring power.
