‘The Cather in the Rye,’ written by J.D. Salinger, is a story of teenager boy. Main character and narrator of the novel, Holden goes through adolescent. The story is first set in Pennsylvania and later set in New York. Holden has a conflict within himself, being innocent or going into adult world. Holden is characterized as cynical and bitter and often alienates himself from the society. Through his wondering, Holden finds the answer to his conflict. There are many symbolisms such as ‘Catcher in the Rye,’ which represents Holden’s different view of having sex. I recommend this novel. Though in the beginning it seemed boring because I didn’t know where the story was going, it was getting better by the end. And after realizing the point that author made, I got to appreciate this novel. J.D. Salinger, born on January 1, 1919, is an American author, best known for his 1951 novel, ‘The Catcher in the Rye.’ He also wrote ‘Seymour: an Introduction’ and short stories. He lived in New York in his early life and later went to World War II. Salinger was disappointed by Hollywood when his work turned in to a failure, “bastardization.” Since then, he never permitted his work to be filmed, and probably that’s why he also put that part in the novel ‘The Catcher in the Rye.’

This book was also really good like the first one. I'm excited to read the third book and the rest of the series.

I used to read this book all the time when i was younger and i just recently re-read it. This is the type of book that i can re-read no matter how old i am. The way that the main character is described is hillarious. She is just so mischevious and always picks on unsuspecting victims. She uses her telekenis to play tricks on her neighbors.

This one was almost as good as the second volume. I loved the Beauty and the Beast one. The artwork for Little Miss Muffet and The Juniper Tree weren't as good in my opinion.

A highly disappointing book/trilogy, though most of that really isn't the books' fault. No, it's my parents fault, for naming me after the main female character, who now turns out to be basically a passive, very beautiful, 'charming'... well... nothing. And charming, as the observing Forsytes explain, is less to do with having a sparkling personality than with being silent, and not saying an awful lot, while looking beautiful. (Women should be seen and not heard, after all. Grrr.) Not exactly something I've either lived up to, or aspired to live up to, though I still have just enough obligatory fondness left for Irene to be irritated by the actress cast to play her in the last BBC remake of the books. Seriously, the one character trait this woman has is to be insanely beautiful, and you cast... well, never mind. On the other hand, and I know it's rather backward, but Soames, sad little man of property at the center of these tales, I really did have a fondness for. It's not his fault he's an emotionally-stunted, callous little douche who sees everything, including people, as property. Really! Ahh Victorian England, you have a lot to answer for... and for some of it, we owe you, actually. Anyway, Soames, although he's clearly not someone who would be pleasant to meet, is still a fascinating, well-drawn character, and he tries. God bless him, he may be an emotional cripple, but he gives his creepy proprietal love to the very utmost of his potential. Finally, if nothing else, the first 50 pages or so are worth reading (before the stupid Irene plot kicks in) for the biting, and rather hilarious, descriptions of the Forsytes and their world. Sarcasm for the win! (P.S - after thinking about it more over the next day, I realise that there really is a lot to like about this book, which is full of well-drawn, complicated characters. And even the bland nothingness of Irene probably does have a point to it - putting us, as readers, into the position of Soames and Forsytes (as Jolyon would use the term, to describe a whole section of society), without any way of fathoming her feelings and her motives. We don't get to kid ourselves that we're special and that different from Soames, because we have nearly as little clue to her as he does. Which is a neat trick, though it doesn't entirely come off successfully. But she's still a highly disappointing namesake to have.)

Ross Thomas was at his best writing comic mysteries with serious undertones, and his best ones featured Artie Wu and Quincy Durant and an unusual cast of characters. I believe they appeared in one or two others in addition to "Chinaman's Chance", which remains my favorite. Thomas died in 1995; the NY Times once called him the greatest storyteller in America, and that is still true 14 years after his death, yet most of his books are out of print. They are well worth finding. Another Thomas book I recall being just terrific is called "The Seersucker Whipsaw" about two American politicos hired to win an election in a newly, er, "democratic" African country.

I saw the book in the bookstore...and of course I had to read the jacket cover, and now am counting down the days until I get it and bring it to its new home :) I'm such a bookjacket whore, I get sucked in by a well written synopsis. Imagine my delight when the little teaser lives up to its name. I'm hoping this will be one of those times. Currently loving this book. The characters, the story...I've become invested in the ending, and am really hoping it doesn't disappoint. I started reading this last night, and I'm 3/4 of the way through it... Okay. done, and I'm not left feeling disappointed, so really keyed up about that. In the first couple pages, I had a tough time getting into the authors stride, but I got it in short order, and loved the book. The plot about ex girlfriend getting vengeance on the guy who leaves to make it big in the rock scene..it was pretty good. I really loved the characters, and how the author humanized them in a way that was at once recognizable and painful...

This still might be my favorite book. The Lord of the Rings had more impact and Infinite Jest was more ground-breaking but those are the only books that are even in the running, which should tell you how much I love the Thought Gang. Granted, there's hardly a word Tibor Fischer has written that I don't love, but the Thought Gang stands apart even in that company. It's funny, and sad, and it's the story of everyone, although really it is about a broken-down, middle-aged Cambridge philosophy professor (lecturer?) and a one-armed French criminal who meet at the bottom-rung of life and somehow form a partnership to rob their way back up the ladder. Doesn't sound like a very universal story. But packed in there you'll find love, failure, friendship, a little Greek and a lot of luck. And most importantly, you'll find hope. It's never too late, even when it is, and the Coffin Method will save every one of us someday.

** spoiler alert ** The historical fiction part of this book was good and very well written, but the rest of it (the part that takes place in Heaven) was wierd and not really how I see things, so that put my rating down a bit. This book makes out Heaven to be some boring place that is not to look forward to and is not at all fun, and that is not how Heaven is. This book says that you do not go directly to Heaven either. It says that when you die you don't go to Heaven unless you are good enough, and even if you are good enough, you don't go to Heaven until you have made up for all of the bad things that you have done. Instead you go "below" to make up for your sins. This book says that you get to Heaven because of what you've done on earth. That you get to Heaven by what you do, and your works of rightousness, which I do not believe at all. I also believe that Heaven is an awesome, fun, no-sadness, no-regret place. This book makes it out to be bad. I did like the historical fiction parts of it a lot though. E. L. Koingsburg is a very talented author.
