Maria Shpagina maisonpascal — Ross Thomas was at his best writing comic mysteries with serious undertones, and his best ones featured Artie Wu and Quincy Durant and an unusual cast of characters. I believe they appeared in one or two others in addition to "Chinaman's Chance", which remains my favorite. Thomas died in 1995; the NY Times once called him the greatest storyteller in America, and that is still true 14 years after his death, yet most of his books are out of print. They are well worth finding. Another Thomas book I recall being just terrific is called "The Seersucker Whipsaw" about two American politicos hired to win an election in a newly, er, "democratic" African country.

Emmanuel Amar emmanuelamar — ** spoiler alert ** The ending was where the story begun for me (somewhere around 165 or so). If it didn't get heated soon, I'd would have skimmed through to finish with 'okay read'. Some parts of the book was hard to believe a black woman like Sheree would not muster the strength to leave sooner or cuss this man out and accept being secretive while he's prowling with Kelly (blonde). Sheree easily cusses with her sister, Coach Kevin, and her diary/journal about Matthew but waited until the end to share what she wanted to do--all talk and no action. If the chapters would have started from the ending chapters and add more depth to the relationship; how she met Matthew, gave birth to his child, and married a couple months later (which you find out these tidbits at the ending chapters). *This is one reason as an author myself, I do so many revisions and rewrites. Move chapters. Delete. Start over, etc. The concept of the storyline was intriguing but some parts for me was unbelievable if the sista snapped with others and her journal versus with who was causing her hurt, disappoints, and loneliness. Not sure why a woman would marry someone who kept them locked in the house and not even know the neighbors without early signs of abuse to show his dominance or controlling power. This would have highlighted the story more where the reader can see he had some kind-of-control over her to keep her sheltered but earlier readings didn't show that Sheree was as weak as she acted in the beginning and middle chapters. Her investigation was only going to the job and family's house, which she should have done before marrying this man for example--at least family regardless of Matt's explanation of why she couldn't. This felt like an arraignment than a marriage. Is there a sequel since it ended abruptly. 2.5/3 stars.

Raghava Balusani rgva — I admit it. I've got a thing for Mordred. Mordred and Loki are the awesome, talented, nice guys who are hated by those they love for reasons they cannot alter and, after being beaten down too many times, rise up. Loki acts out; Mordred stages a coup for the good of all Britons. Their failures to rise above and change the system are very sad. Someday, I'm going to write a novel from the POV of Loki's therapist. Anyway, The Book of Mordred was more about the young girl he helps (saving her from certain death at age 5, protecting her from villagers in her preteens, and then sending her off to Avalon in his place) than about Mordred. So, probably a better book that I'm calling it, but not enough Mordred for me. I felt cheated. When's the sequel to Clegg's Mordred: Bastard Son coming out? Even if liking it does convince Amazon.com that I want to read horrible gay romance novels, I'm dying for my next Mordred installment
