I was 230 pages in and still not able to care about what was going on in the book. "That's not like me," I thought as I was reading a passage about how India's lower class get into the country. "I usually only do that with books that win the Man Booker prize." So I checked the front cover and there was the circle informing me of Desai's newest accolade. Yeesh. If you've been wanting to pick this book up, don't. I can give you at least three better books dealing with Indian/Pakistani immigrants finding their place in America. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy or Family Matters by Rohinton Mistry. Read Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai for the gay take on this same idea.

George Kennan, little know today, was a real pioneer. He alone was instrumental in exposing to the world the worst conditions possible in the world in Russia. Then came the communists and Stalin and the bad things got worse. Kennan worked for the US government and Russian people to hold the Soviet government accountable. He was as knowledgeable about Russian affairs as Arman Hammer. You have to be interested in Russian civilization and culture to endure this, else you will put it down and never pick it up again.

In this second book of The Last Policeman seriesk, JJ Liddy has grown up and married. He and Aisling are raising their three children, Jenny, Hazel and Donal. Things have gone awry since he and Aisling made their original life plans. JJ is now more popular than ever and is constantly on music tours, so he cannot devote time to making fiddles. Plus his deal with Aengus for chiming maple to make the best fiddles has not been fulfilled. Aisling, who wanted to study homeopathy, has been left alone to raise the children, including Jenny, the child who forgets to go to school, runs through the fields without shoes (or loses them when she is made to wear them) and can see a ghost on top of the beacon on top of the mountain. Similar to the first book, Thompson brings the mythical elements of Ireland into a strong storyline already well established. This novel takes place 15 years after the end of the first book and yet the sequence is seamless. All the characters are fully developed and urge the reader to become totally immersed in their lives. I highly recommend this book. It is so completely enjoyable, you will probably find yourself reading nonstop.

I must admit that I was given this book as a Christmas present in 2005 and wasn't able to finish it until last month in 2007....however, that is not because the book is boring or slow-it's because my life is too crazy and hectic! This book really opened my eyes to who John Adams was and how much he did to make our country what it is today. Hopefully you will be as amazed and entranced.

I loved and enjoyed reading this book so I hope all of you will too!! ~Sarah
Yossel, April 19, 1943 is a companion of sorts to Kubert's earlier Fax From Sarajevo. This story is presented like a sketchbook "diary" and feels immediate and alive. It's a personal tale of a young artist's hellish existence in the Warsaw ghetto in 1941, and how events conspired for the Jewish prisoners to rebel against their captors. Not quite as good or original as Sarajevo, but still a worthy read. Kubert's art continues to amaze me.

Eventually I enjoyed it, when I got over the fact it was just women nattering at each other about trivial things. She writes well and captures conversation very well. By the middle I was thoroughly enjoying it. And yes, I have a crush on Mr. Darcy. I regret nothing.

There are some things that they don't warn you when you're a kid. Like when I first got my period and I looked down at my minnie mouse undies and thought to myself "Great, I can't wear you anymore. Apparently I'm a woman now." If only I had Vinnie to guide me through all the ups and downs of this "cycle of life." Complete with stickers like ice creams to represent heavy flows, useful yoga streches, postcards offering "Greetings from Camp Cramp" and a tampon case with a scary puma on one side to "keep your tampons safe". I've come to love the pig-nosed Vinnie during the time when others can't stand me. Useful tip: Stick Vinnie on your coffee table so guests now whether to stay or leave. True story: I was at a photo shoot. Hot model named Henry (he's in the Marcs Spring/Summer 06 campaign) looks amongst my pile of crap, points to a red pencil case and goes "what's that?" "you mean this old thing?" I say and pull out the tampon case. Watch his face change from inquistive to horror when he realised what it was."Don't worry Henry," I says, "There's no tampons in there... only pads." Poor boy

I’m finally done with this one. This isn’t my favorite Sparks novel, yet I liked it but not as much as I liked Safe Haven and the others. It’s somewhat like Nights In Rodanthe. The author, trying to make the readers believe that we can fall in love with people in just a short period of time. Things like that. I guess I love Lexie’s character. She’s smart, witty, and pretty. She’s the kind of woman men will have a hard time dealing with but in the end find themselves falling in love with. I just didn’t like how almost half the book was just about the characters trying to figure out some things. The ending didn’t surprise me. In fact, it was kind of predictable. But I guess, I have to read its sequel, At First Sight. As the usual, I’ll be posting quotes from this book that I really really love. ;)

I have always loved Betty White. She is a women who is career minded and not the domestic goddess many claim to be. She loves books and animals. She doesn't own a computer and writes longhand. She has a relationship with her husband Allen even after his death. Things I learned from this book, she sponsers a service dog once a year, she is an active member of the Los Angles Zoo, she has only rescue dogs. Her career in TV has brought her many awards, and the love of her fellow actors. I really admire her and only hope that life can be this great for most at age 89.
