Oscar Cañizares montondeideas — George Kennan, little know today, was a real pioneer. He alone was instrumental in exposing to the world the worst conditions possible in the world in Russia. Then came the communists and Stalin and the bad things got worse. Kennan worked for the US government and Russian people to hold the Soviet government accountable. He was as knowledgeable about Russian affairs as Arman Hammer. You have to be interested in Russian civilization and culture to endure this, else you will put it down and never pick it up again.

Mustafa Hussain _ustafa_ussain — Captivating as always. It has got it's own unexpected twist again. But I felt like it was a bit unemotional and stoic. Nevertheless, it was a good read. :) Oh, and i love the c.d. thing. :)) I have a good feeling about it.

Luiz Otávio lterciotti — I read this while I was moving and needed something light and fluffy for the 10 minute breaks between scrubbing and packing. Unfortunately, it was really disappointing. While I somewhat enjoyed the secondary narrative (the protagonist's grandmother's diaries), the supposedly parallel protagonist's story felt forced and flat. Neither of the "love interests" have any depth to them-- she may as well have been choosing between posters on the walls. All in all, I put down this book with a general feeling of having wasted the couple hours it took to read.

Paolo Callegari paolocalleg — The subtitle describes it pretty well..("the amazing true story of a young family, a broken down zoo and the wild animals that changed their lives forever") except that it doesn't mention that the young mother is diagnosed with a brain tumor right in the midst of the purchase of the zoo. Written by the husband--and first time zoo director--this is an amazing story of triumph on all sorts of levels. An added enjoyment were the animal "factoids" that surprised me. Who knew that tigers have sensors to detect a victim's pulse in their two front canine teeth so that their lethal bite on the back of the neck will be successful?! It was also fascinating to learn about the "behind the scenes" activities and legal requirements connected to running a zoo!
