I am obsessed with Asian culture and their arts and a geisha is truly living art. This book was written simply and beautifully as you would imagine a Japanese story would be. I saw the movie which was very well done, especially in capturing the beauty of the land and people, but they took a lot of short cuts in the story line.

Jaws is one of my favourite films. However, they made a great film by taking the central premise of this novella and stripping out an immense amount of chaff to get a great storyline. The writing is clunky and awkward, and the ridiculous subplots feel shovelled in to try and make the story more exciting. Its as though Benchley thought "The shark isn't enough, we need more sex. Lots of sex. And the mafia." The characters in this book are unsympathetic, even Benchley's portrayal of Brody meant that I didn't care much about his wife's affair with Hooper. And they discuss women having a rape fantasy, which might work in lit-fic but in this potboiler serves only to make it more seedy. This book sucks.

All right, you want a lot of laughing with an acid tinge? So read this novel. All through my reading I have a visual image of this story play by the Monty Python! It's funny, it's irriverent and not politically correct: it's an absolute worthy reading. In a fantasy kingdom, Velenth is the fair and handsome son of the king, while his twin Nalenth is the dark and hated one. So the king decides to seal Nalenth in a high tower. But when Velenth is sixteen years old, he kills his father, sends his mother in a convent and continues to keep his brother in the tower. He is merciless and lonely. Oh, yes, he here and there satisfy himself going to the barrack and disguising as a pretty boy, takes advantage of all the army, but now he craves a companion, a consort to share his life, and yes, to makes love. But he is The Dark Lord, and frankly, he is a spoilt boy, insolent and vain. So his advisor, the elf Reynard, and his bodyguard, a girl only knows as The Bodyguard, set theirself to find a consort to their lord. And with a proclamation they say to all the kingdom: Dark Lord Seeks Friendship, Maybe More. But The Bodyguard thinks his second cousin, Sven the Viking, could be the right man. Only a little problem: Sven prefers girls, well endowed girls. I like this book. I can hardly define it a romance, maybe more a comedy, and acid comedy cause Velenth makes the most terrible things, never regrets them. And everyone around him thinks he is right and makes the most vicious things for the sake of the kingdom. He also hates unicorns! I loved this book. I can see now why my daughter read and enjoyed this book so much in high school. It's funny, heartbreaking, and presents multi-faceted characters who struggle with many of the problems that I think everyone can identify with; from bright yet insecure Charlie, to gregarious yet secretive Patrick to mysterious and lovely Sam. You can learn quite a bit from observing and listening, but, like the advice Charlie receives, you've got to participate.

Set in a Catholic boarding school all doctrine and discipline with zero tolerance of creativity. Nothing much really happens till the very end when the main protagonist, ironically a young devout girl who tries thro the whole book to make sense of the world of blind faith she lives in, gets expelled for writing a book. End of.
