Marcelo Pereira mpmarcelof0d4d — Jaws is one of my favourite films. However, they made a great film by taking the central premise of this novella and stripping out an immense amount of chaff to get a great storyline. The writing is clunky and awkward, and the ridiculous subplots feel shovelled in to try and make the story more exciting. Its as though Benchley thought "The shark isn't enough, we need more sex. Lots of sex. And the mafia." The characters in this book are unsympathetic, even Benchley's portrayal of Brody meant that I didn't care much about his wife's affair with Hooper. And they discuss women having a rape fantasy, which might work in lit-fic but in this potboiler serves only to make it more seedy. This book sucks.

Joana Arieiro _oana_rieiro — It's a definitely a thought provoking book. I think if you work in the media or are an artist it can be relevant, but also a little scary. I would put it up there with Ways of Seeing by John Berger.

_asilina35
Vasilina Kleshchevnikova _asilina35 — Father Brown, that innocent cleric, always has the answer because he is used to dealing with good and evil and is able to see it more quickly than his more jaded companions. It also helps that he has an amazing intellect and keen observation. These stories are so much fun. A crime is committed and no one can see how it could have been done. Father Brown gives 3 or 4 explanations and his companions are stupefied. He explains that they said there could be no explanation and he has provided 4, none of which is correct. Then this innocent innocuous little priest explains exactly what happened. As you would expect, he is always completely moral and concerned more about the spiritual condition of the criminal than the offense to society. He has some interesting ways for the criminal to be reconciled to God though and than makes these stories even more interesting.

Kumamoto Native freebiesc63e — This novel was not as gripping as others in the series. It is set when Kinsey Milhone is younger and deals with an unsolved crime that is set even further in the past--the kidnapping of child. The reliability of Kinsey's client is called into question early on and adds some interest to the plot. The flashbacks to the time period of the crime aren't particularly convincing, especially the descriptions and actions of the "hippy" flower children living in the school bus. Kinsey does use some of her trademark ingenuity to follow clues and make connections, and the author does provide her usual thorough descriptions of place and character. A subplot related to Kinsey's childhood and family relations is only mildly compelling. Whether Grafton is running out of steam remains to be seen.

Max Enrich maxenrich — Great plot, poor writing. I don't need every development in a story to be foreshadowed. Dan Brown's plotlines are always full of twists and turns, which I enjoy, but every chapter doesn't need to end with the line, "if only so and so had known that soon he would wish he'd had ____ with him." For me, that became tedious.

mohammed7afez
Mohammed Hafez mohammed7afez — This book is quite extraordinary. I learnt so much about how our world operates. and subsequently how its systems of prosperity, equity and security are working together in what is aptly described as a suicide machine. at times i was shocked and overwhelmed at learning just how much trouble we are really in. McLaren then shows how Jesus has addressed these crises. He presents a fresh (and what i found abundantly refreshing) perspective & explanation of Jesus' teaching and message. An alternative, emerging understanding of the metaphor "the kingdom of God" is presented with terms such as: "the divine peace insurgency", "God's unterror movement", "new global love economy" and "God's sacred ecosystem". Also the deeper reasons behind our global crises, such as dominant framing stories, are explored extensively. thankfully McLaren offers insight into how a widespread revolution of hope can turn this suicide machine around. I'm amazed at the depth of understanding one person can have about these extremely complex issues and also masterfully communicate them to us with striking clarity. I certainly hope this book is instrumental in sparking the kind of change we all so desperately need.
