A true classic. The author has done a wonderful job in portraying the characters. The book is about a French woman who gets married to a dull doctor but then goes to find passion outside of this marriage. The novel goes into the life of this happen and how her desires lead to a pitiful end. The book is story telling at its best

What I learned from this book was to hate myself and be ashamed of loving women. It wasn't until "Patience and Sarah" Isabel Miller's 1972 landmark lesbian novel which depicts a love affair between two women in early 19th-century New England, that I saw positive role models for lesbians.

I very much sensed that the author somehow admired this kid and maybe glorified him a bit in this book. I have often lamented on what it would be like to live this sort of "free" life and I somewhat related to it, having spent a few of months "on the road" traveling through the Western US, in 1994 shortly before I read this book, but in the end I simply saw this kid as arrogant and foolish. I enjoyed the read none the less and thought the story was well told.

Eh. The travelogue is lacking a general theme. The text is OK, but not very engaging. The author doesn't seem to be on any mission except to observe things, and his wife is a non-character. The title is misleading, as only the last third of the book has anything to do with Tibet. The book ends abruptly, failing to draw any conclusions. Still some decent material in here.
