I kept wishing I had a red pen so that I could cross out all the annoying parts. Maybe it then could've been a decent short story.

If you've seen the movie, it was extremely faithful to the book, except for the whole being set in America bit. It's an engaging read about someone who seems familiar in a vague, I've-met-this-guy-dozens-of-times sort of way...but funnier. A book about the very slow process of growing up when you first start to think about it in your thirties, and about the beauty of the music that can carry you through.

Loved this book and everything in it! I love the style she used to deal with such a heavy topic. I know there were many quotes and situations that make this book so believable. I think this is all in all a wonderful realistic book that everyone should read! any other author with a different style and I might have not liked or made it through this book, but the style is just amazing!

I read this book cover to cover three or four times. In hindsight, with the benefit of some years of reflection and further experience, I think this book is perhaps a little too much of a panacea for those looking for healing. But at that time in my life it was like a breath of fresh air, opening me up to a world outside of myself I never knew existed. It really helped make sense of the world around me and inside myself.

This was a big disappointment after having read The Maltese Falcon, in all its stark, atmospheric glory. If this is all Hammett had left to give in his later writing life, it's probably for the best that he gave it up. The main characters are so shallow and have such drunken and meaningless lives, I kept wanting to slap them upside the heads. But next to the completely dysfunctional family of the title character, they come off like Albert Schweitzer and Mother Teresa. On the plus side, Nick and Nora Charles have to be among the coolest names for a fictional married couple. And they do hae a cool dog named Asta. I read somewhere that the first, partially written version of The Thin Man was told from the point of view of the detective that Nick Charles was working with. I think *that* could have been a terrific book. That detective stood out among the secondary characters and we would have gotten more than enough of the Charles' weirdness from reading about his interactions with them.

Not as good as tender at the bone, but still worthwhile.

The first [Salman Rushdie:] book I've read. While his prose is true to his writing style, it took a while to get invested to the story. He created a world so closely tied with the history of the time period that it was a fantastic story to lose yourself in. He presents his commentaries on social issues and inherent human nature in a way that makes you question the core of the truth you once believed.

I do not think that this was a bad book, but I'm not sure what the fuss is all about, and the annoying obsessions of friends kind of turned me against it from the beginning, I have to say..
