A brilliant book, chronicling the lives of three generations of Chinese women who lived thru the Sun-Yat-Sen era, then the Communist era and then during the cultural revolution in the mid 1960's. They are the author's grandmother, her mother and herself. The book is revetting as it is based on true lives. It chronicles the paranoia of the communists and is scathing about Chairman Mao-Ze-Dong. The book details the tragedies and cruelties of the Great Leap forward and the cultural revolution. It shows how good hard working ordinary people suffered under the vengeance that was let loose by the cultural revolution. A must read for anyone interested in contemporary Chinese history and Chinese communism.

a 4.5, really. another great Eberle book in which he challenges the theology of what he calls "death-centered Christianity" versus "live-centered Christianity". death-centered meaning the theology in which Christ's death is the focal point and emphasis of redemption versus the resurrection as advocated by life-centered Christianity. he talks about Death-centered Christianity (i'll just write DCC from now on) is really heavily rooted in Reformed theology, and he goes into the history of where that belief came from and then goes into the implications of someone whose entire beliefs are centered on DCC. he also goes on to explaining why Reformed thought and DCC is not in the Bible, but he takes care in saying that the death of Jesus Christ was still very, very important; but Christ didnt stop there. he was resurrected. Life-centered Christianity (LCC) looks at the Bible to say what redemption was, that it wasnt about Jesus "paying a penalty for sin" or "taking on God's wrath"--which are not found in scripture--but that Jesus sacrificed himself and took on the sins of the world, and this act opened up a covenant between God and man with Jesus being the mediator of that covenant. his death wasnt just the end, though, but more like the fuse to an explosive, with the explosion being Jesus' resurrection. Eberle goes into detail about how the early Church didnt need to explain to potential converts about their sinfulness, the meaning of Jesus' death, and God pouring out wrath. instead, what they did was talk about Jesus being alive, being resurrected, being Lord. this book is very challenging because it will reveal which side of redemption you are really on--on the life side or death side. this one emphasis has HUGE ramifications on our daily lives as it determines what we think about God, ourselves, God in us, sin, and the world in general. this book had a huge effect on my perspective. after reading this book, i see God as so good. i mean, i knew he was good before, but now he's even more so. this book should be a little longer, i think. i wish he couldve gone into more detail about some things, and less detail about other things. it's not hard to read or understand, but it's a subject that probably doesnt appeal to many, unfortunately, since it's so theological. but i really wish every christian read this book just for the fact that it would make them think.

Thank goodness - I was finally able to reclaim my enjoyment of reading this series with the final book. Not so bound up in endless dialog about philosophy and ethics, not as much time on the perpetually dysfunctional (but brilliant!!) main family, it finally returned to moving interesting characters through a plot that kept pages turning. The ending felt rushed for me. Significant things happened to change the main character's lives in the last 10 pages, and (especially as a sappy reader) a little more epilogue-type information at the end ("so how did all those new solutions work out..?") would have helped ease through the major transitions. They were a long time coming, then suddenly they all happened, and the book was done. Yeowza. But again, a great book to read, and I loved the characters, ideas, and situations created by the author.

Not only does it allude to key plot points from the first book, and its own story, but the tale itself metaphorically catches fire, making it very hard to put down. The ending itself leaves you no choice but to find and read its sequel, Mocking Jay.

Toen Witteman bekendmaakte "noodgedwongen" naar de VS te verhuizen, verkneukelde ik me al bij de gedachte aan haar perceptie van de Amerikanen en haar belevenissen in die rijke buitenwijk van Washington. En wat een hilarische bundeling van haar VK-columns! Die weeïg trotse verhalen die veel moeders over hun koters opdissen blijven je bij Witteman gelukkig bespaard. In plaats daarvan bijvoorbeeld een prachtige beschrijving van haar bezoekjes aan ons Hollandse - oh betutteling en spruitjeslucht! - consultatiebureau. Ook leuk is Wittemans optekening van de Amerikaanse inflatie, die zich niet alleen tot de dollar beperkt. Zo zijn Amerikaanse schoolrapporten ware juweeltjes - al helemaal voor Hollandse "doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg" begrippen. De kinderen worden er stuk voor stuk bestempeld als 'uniquely gifted' en Wittemans vierjarige zoontje blijkt volgens zijn schoolrapport geen uitzondering. Een korte bloemlezing: "uniek, bijzonder kind, evenzeer geliefd door zijn leeftijdgenoten als door volwassenen! Zijn persoonlijkheid is een wonderbaarlijke combinatie van uitbundigheid, gevoeligheid, speelsheid en gevoel voor humor. L. is een zeer sociaal kind, een zorgzame, aandachtig luisterende vriend…iemand die onophoudelijk empathie en begrip toont voor zijn medemens! Hoewel hij over een vanzelfsprekend en natuurlijk leiderschap beschikt, stelt hij anderen eveneens genereus in staat activiteiten te ontplooien..etc." In het echt eist hij toch echt liever krijsend de afstandsbediening op en staart hij apatisch - met duim in de mond - naar de tv. Een doornormaal kind dus. En dan zijn er nog haar aanvaringen met The American Way of Life. Zoals je Europese vergeelde stompjes moeten ontbloten, terwijl je omringd bent door grijnzende rijen verblindend blikkerende witte facings: je moet maar durven. Om dan ook nog plaats te moeten nemen in de tandartsstoel bij een Bright Smile Clinic... Kortom, dikke pret.

I haven't read many books from John Grisham and after "The Summons" I'm not too keen to read more from him. Both the main character and the main plot were a bit boring to read. The book made a fairly good attempt in being a good law-paranoia-thriller but failed to succeed in any of these parts.

This book is a masterwork of wonder and imagination. Morgenstern has a J.K. Rowling-esque knack for world building and places the reader firmly inside this fantastical world. This book is destined to be a huge hit and the movie production is just a matter of time. I don't think it will be as big as The Help or The DaVinci Code as some people have predicted. It is far too literary and won't appeal to those who depend on dialogue driven narrative. A beautiful tale.
