Kim Patishnock kimpatishnock — The Kite Runner An Afghan physician, Khaled Hosseini, tells the story of a young Afghan boy, Amir, and his life journey in the book, The Kite Runner. Amir was a young boy from wealth who befriends his servant. But, Amir loses this friendship after making the decision to keep quiet about a deep dark secret. Amir was a spoiled child, his father, Baba, was a strong powerful man in the community. He enjoyed his life before Russian forced invaded his homeland in Kabul. Amir and his father were forced to sacrifice everything in order to escape to the safe land of America. Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. This was also where he creates Amir’s home. In 1980, he and his family moved to San Jose, California. In 1989 he enrolled in University of California-San Diego's School of Medicine, while in medical school Khaled began his first novel, The Kite Runner. Khaled Hosseini had a first hand experience growing up in Afghanistan of the invading Soviet Groups. Like Amir, he too was forced out of his home and his parents fled to America. Although the Kite Runner is a fictional novel, I believe the characters reflect upon Khaled and his own life experiences. The purpose of this novel was to tell the truth, and forgiveness shall follow. It was uncommon for the wealthy to treat their servants well, but Baba grew up with his now servant, Ali. He welcomed Ali and his son Hassan into his home like they were family. Although he thought of them as family, they still were expected to complete the servant tasks. Amir and Hassan were together since birth. After Hassan would complete his chores, he and Amir were able to play. They were an excellent kite flying team. Kite flying was a well known, respected game of the Afghan culture. One day after a kite flying tournament, Amir found his honorable partner Hassan being abused and did nothing. Amir kept quiet and never told Hassan he knew. The guilt ate away at Amir until he couldn’t live with Hassan anymore, and carefully thought up a plan that would make him go away forever. After the Russians invaded, Amir and Baba leave for America and Amir believes he will leave the memories of Hassan there forever. Amir ended up marrying. Later he learns he must return to Afghanistan and make things right again. He chooses to go; in search that he will get rid of this guilt that has stalked him his entire life. The book was beautifully written, with descriptive details of his once lively colorful city Kabul and now the destruction that followed. The city of Kabul represented Amir in a way, he once was a smart happy child then turns into a man who cannot stop thinking of the tragedy of what he allowed happen to his friend. The author’s purpose was to show others how the truth is the best way of freedom. Allowing the truth to come out cannot hurt you. Khaled Hosseini was trying to prove to his audience that the truth is the only chance of forgiveness. If you want others to forgive you, first you must let it out. I can relate to this. I understand that sometimes you may feel bad about the truth, but the longer you leave it inside the longer you may not have the chance for that person to forgive you. It is important to live life to the fullest. Life is not guaranteed the next day, so live with no regrets. I enjoyed the strength Amir showed at the end when he goes back to Afghanistan, but throughout the book the character of Amir made me angry because he had no backbone. Amir let everyone else take the blame or use their courage. But, in the end he allowed the truth to prevail making this a great novel and lesson learned. Although I believe the main point was to tell the truth, the book also came with many more lessons learned. The importance of the truth definitely stands out. The characters were wonderfully made up with many traits others would wish they had. The novel showed another part of the world that some of us Americans are unaware of. The issues are still presented today. Some people are privileged and live in a country where they have freedom and are safe, others are not so fortunate. I think this novel raises awareness of these other countries and what they must fight for. Everyone deals with the truth and whether they should stay quiet or let it out. It is a very consequential issue. I would certainly recommend this novel to others all over the world because it shows others the consequences of not speaking the truth.

Classificare Nove classificarenove — Very entertaining. I have been told that the movie was based more on this graphic novel than it was on the novel itself...
