Though it's his first book to play with the mold he'd already perfected, the Palahniuk-brand Crazy Plot Twist can be seen coming a mile away.

This is an awesome book concerning the life of a military personnel around various parts of the world, in particular Special Operation Forces. This book brings to light the attitude, the patriotism and values of these soldiers; written to portray these things through their perspective. Kaplan does a tremendous job to surrender his civilian perspective in order to tell the story of his journeys.

I'm sad to say that The Alchemist didn't live up to the hype for me; while it's a sweet story with a great message about following your dreams and listening to your heart, it was a bit too literal and straight-forward for me. I like a little more metaphor with my parables, you know? - a little bit more story over the author encouraging me not to give up in the face of obstacles. That's purely personal taste, and maybe I'm just a big curmudgeon, like the crystal merchant.

In anticipation of Bakker's next book, I want to explain my passion for him. Most of my favorite fantasy authors are ur-nerds, a crucial part of what make me like 'em. C.S. Lewis was a medieval literature professor. Tolkien was a philologist. Jaqueline Carey is a religious studies Ph.D.; they're all aesthetes, and their fondness for and intense familiarity with some stripe of arcana is exactly what allows them to create such rich, engaging alternate realities. Bakker's a Ph.D. too, but of a more worldly stripe; his area of expertise is psychology. While the Prince of Nothing series is an impressively, even excessively detailed alternate universe, that's not what makes it an interesting read. In fact, that's probably what makes it, for many people, unreadable. Nope, the appeal lies in that these books are nothing less than Bakker's brilliant and very dark treatise on the relationship between culture, self-image, emotion, and behavior. Heavy slice, right? No wonder these books are so long. Sure, you've got the regulation destroy-the-world baddies, and they are thrillingly, uniquely bad. You've got standard issue phenomenal cosmic powers, and they dazzle appropriately. But the fantasy set-pieces (aka the plot) are just there to provide clothing for a story about the human mind and heart, and how a clever and talented person can manipulate both.
i really enjoyed this book and i am recommending this to all of you:)

The French as seen by an understanding Englishman, with a few original observations. Interesting enough to make it a pleasant read.

When Clive and his friend Terry break into a warehouse for a lark, thenight watchman falls while chasing them and is seriously injured. Although Clive feels guilty, the social worker, the vicar and his parents portray him as innocent causing him to feel even worse.

I really liked the idea of this story. Weaver has a way really pulling you into the world he has created. I have a few complaints though. First, there was a lot of set up in the beginning...but the end seemed rushed to me. It would have been nice spend a little more in depth time with Lance and Claudia. Second, I would have liked to read more about Marco. His character was very original and we just didnt see enough of him. I did find myself pulling for Claudia and Lance, they really understood each other and you could tell they loved each other -- even though it really is unrealistic. Over all this book was very enjoyable and well worth the read. I didnt want to put it down and I just had to figure out how it would end.
