** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed this book. If I had read this earlier, I would have likely never read Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Like many ya dystopia, if you think too hard about the premise, the magic of the fiction kind of unravels. Luckily, the conscious awakening story of Jonas is so good, you don't care. Especially, if like me, you see the ending as ambiguous. I want to believe that he really found others at the end but its so hard to make that leap if I think about it too long. I am sad too that we don't get an epilogue about what happens to the Giver. I was left wanting more even though I don't really need more. I'm rambling but I think this book will stay with me awhile. I'm going to read the rest of the quartet but not right away. Now, I can see the movie!

I wanted to like this a whole lot more that I did. I ended up just getting annoyed with the kids. What I really wanted, I guess, was From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg, only set in the Thorne Rooms of the Art Institute of Chicago (one of my Favorite Places on Earth.)

This is a rather sweet fan-fiction re-imagining of The Lord of the Rings. Eskov badly needs an editor, for structure and content and language. (Some of the US slang made me cringe. Faramir calls Eowyn 'Honey'. Or is it 'Baby'?) But it's very amusing to see Middle Earth in terms of geopolitics. And would you believe the Elves are the sinister bad guys, bent on global domination? And the Nazgul are philosopher-priests; tee-hee. Lovely idea, but I'm probably too old to buy it. I've gotten almost 40% through. I loved Tolkien, of course, and would probably have finished Eskov's book thirty years ago. Not this day. :-)

I heard about this book on NPR, and Michael Ondaatje read an excerpt from it, which was just beautiful...and I had to go and buy it that day. Although I had a hard time with The English Patient, I loved Anil's Ghost, and I'm also in love with this one. I'm reading it slowly because I don't want it to end. :) I read the beginning of a review of Divisadero in the New Yorker, where Ondaatje's writing was compared to Cubism. Then I had to stop reading because I didn't want to know what the journalist had to say about the book. I love it, and didn't want that ruined. :) It's lovely, poetic writing and incredible storytelling. Already a favorite.

An easy, informative read. Great historical info about various spirits and some fun-to-know facts are included. Great tasting notes after each chapter. At the risk of sounding silly, I really wish this book had some pictures to break up the solid text a little bit. Some color pics of liquor bottles of various types would be a good addition for reference, and some mixed drink photos with the included recipes would be welcome as well.
