It is possible to drag characters through hell for about 300 pages, making circumstances worse in every paragraph. My hand is in my pants just thinking about it. I can't imagine enjoying anything near as much as this incredible story anytime in the near future. This one is going to be tough to beat.

Wow, what a wonderfully unique book. Like an old fashioned spooky fairie tale. So lyrical. So poetic. I don't know how else to describe it. You'll just have to read it for yourselves. Prepare to be enchanted.

I don't think I've ever read a book yet that has caused so much emotion to stir inside me like this one did. I fell in love with their characters and their determination to stay alive even when they were viewed as little more than recyclable trash in the eyes of the world they lived in. The themes are deep and make you think, not like other young adult books. Pro-life or pro-choice it doesn't matter, this book will still give you a new way to see things. It is well written, organized and easy to understand. The characters are not black and white or shallow. I hope you take my review to heart and give this book and Neal Shusterman a chance because I believe you won't regret it. Maybe like me you'll stay up all night reading and then wondering what can we do to avoid creating a society like the one in the book in the near future. Because the way things are going, it is not that unimaginable.

I read this while I was moving and needed something light and fluffy for the 10 minute breaks between scrubbing and packing. Unfortunately, it was really disappointing. While I somewhat enjoyed the secondary narrative (the protagonist's grandmother's diaries), the supposedly parallel protagonist's story felt forced and flat. Neither of the "love interests" have any depth to them-- she may as well have been choosing between posters on the walls. All in all, I put down this book with a general feeling of having wasted the couple hours it took to read.

Some stories are better than others, my absolute favorite was "Hatrack River". Least enjoyed: "Mom and Dad on the Home Front." I'd been an fan of SciFi/Fantasy short stories back in highschool, this was the first book of this genre I'd picked up in at least 15 years. :-) Still entertaining, and I didn't feel nearly as silly as I'd feared I would.

This book has very little to do with zen, or motorcycle maintenace. I read before I did a motorcycle trip from Chicago to Montana, and loved the way he wrote his trip across some of the same area. But the heart of the book comes down to an undefinable perception of quality, and how we search and evaluate its relevance.
