Not Crichton's best. Published after his death and I'm sure this is one of his early manuscripts. Truly. It's not a bad story, but it doesn't have Crichton's voice. It's a good look for a writer as to why you don't publish everything you write

Lovely, compelling, and carefully-detailed -- I fell in love with the characters from the beginning, and I'm now hoping for a sequel.

3rd in series 1994 "Imagine a cross between Nora Charles and Kinsey Millhone, a female sleuth who walks and talks like a thirty-something Lauren Bacall--and you'll have a pretty good portrait of K.K. Beck's Jane da Silva, a former lounge singer who has been the chief (and only) investigator for Seattle's Foundation for Righting Wrongs. Can collect on her uncle's vast inheritance only when she solves worthwhile "hopeless cases." She's a lady who values her independence, yearns for a healthy bank balance, and appreciates a good wine, a Cole Porter tune, a great clothing sale....and a fine looking man." from the flyleaf As with all 4 of the Jane da Silva books, I appreciate the Seattle setting, the forays into other nearby regions, her comedic endeavors to satisfy the terms of the uncle's will, her bungling into a clever solution, and just about everything else about these light, humorous mysteries. Very satisfying short reads.

A page turner.

City of Djinns is a masterpiece interweaving a humorous but realistic pen picture of the Delhi in the late 80s with an investigation into the history of Delhi through the ages by the author. From life of Anglo-Indian generals of the Mughals before the East India company to archeology of the Mahabharat, the 1984 riots, Sufism across India, life of eunuchs in today's Delhi, the man investigates so many interesting things. It is one of those books that open a hundred little peepholes in your head that you can keep looking into even after you've finished reading the book.

A nice change of pace. I like the circus setting, the author has done some research and some of the events in the book are based on true stories.

Disturbing and sad.

This book is an inspiration for anyone who cares about early childhood, multicultural, or ESL education. It's essentially Sylvia Ashton Warner's diary from the many years that she spent teaching Maori children. She was an incredibly innovative woman who cared deeply about the well-being of her disadvantaged students and who did her best to tailor education individually to the needs of each child. Her ideas were unfortunately not only ahead of her time, but still ahead of ours.

This was a strange and wonderful book that I enjoyed immensely. It is dense and confusing in many parts, so it also frustrated me. I would highly recommend it to people who have a high tolerance for dense reading, confusing storylines, and Persian history. It was really difficult to follow at times, but taking it slow and re-reading the most confusing parts helped me keep up with the story. It may be worth a second read now that my mind has a map of where the story is going, and also the language is so beautiful I would love to spend more time enjoying it. This isn't a speed read or a book you can skim, but it is worth the effort and time.

This is another one of those books where you're not sure who you are rooting for, everything is a bit gray in Aislinn's world. Second half of the book is better then the first and it has a huge plot twist that's going to pay dividends in from here on out.
