8 Best Books for Young Adults--non-fiction I enjoyed this book very much! This is an autobiography about a man named Jack Gantos who has dreams of becoming a writer. He loves to read and he longs to put his ideas on paper for all to read. However, because he grew up in an economically rough environment, he doesn't have the means to go to college. He doesn't have money nor the grades to pursue his dream. Finally, just as he was getting ready to work for his dad he was approached with opportunity to make $10,000 but, in order to make that money he had to help transport hash to New York and then sell it to the eager buyers. Jack is almost done with this and he is relieved to be over with it, but he ends up getting caught and having to do time in prison. He is able to make the best of the situation and gets through his sentence working with the medical staff. He writes down his thoughts in prison and upon release he is able to find a place to stay, a job, and the opportunity to start over. I think this is a great book especially for teens. It is a great book to discuss the difference between healthy and unhealthy risks. It will allow teens to have the opportunity to talk about the consequences of tough decisions. It may be difficult to sell this book because it is a true life story and because the plot may be unrelateable to some and a situation that many teens might think to themselves, 'this could never happen to me'. So, to help promote it I would have to really bring the audience in by asking them some tough questions about they would do. I think it is very believable because it is a true story and hopefully will be taken more seriously than a book like this that is fiction. 5Q 4P J,S, A

** spoiler alert ** Now that I sit to write the review, I realize there's an Italian movie very similar to part of the plot here. Michelangelo Antonioni has a film on a small island where the person disappears, and the whole movie they look for her, but eventually give up and go home. About 20 minutes in, they've nearly forgotten her already. So this has a strong relevance to this book that I didn't see before, but this book is about more than that, just like the movie is. Likewise, I didn't realize I'd already read the short story that was incorporated into the plot for this novel. So, that is another instance where I get a sort-of deja vu effect from reading it. Some of his strongest material is found here including the first time any homoerotic content between girls is included, which is often his most memorable and strongest writing, like in Norwegian Wood. Well, all of his works echo all of the others, but this one seemed to be especially prone to that. I also adored--was captivated-- by the woman trapped in the ferris wheel. If I remember correctly, she also had the same reaction as the girl in Norwegian Wood, needing to make love the first time in order to decide she'd never want to be touched like that again. I don't quite recall the man in her room enough to elaborate any more than that, though. That said, I always looked at this and assumed it'd be some sort of 1950's space race saga, involving romances between Japan and Russia. Doesn't he include the 1960s in most of his other works? So this led me far from what I first expected when I began it.
