Conor Whooley whooleycmc60f — This book started off great--Rousseau was in trouble, Hume was a man-about-town, and then Hume helped Rousseau escape to England. That was the exciting part. The whole relationship between the two lasted four months, and the recriminations apparently lasted much longer. That's how the book reads, too. The action lasts for a little while, and the fallout takes about two-thirds of the book. Interesting, but not the page-turner it started out as.

札札 蒋 6941898574c8c — The title is self-evident on a basic level - this is a story about a ghost. It is also a story about revenge that reaches beyond the grave. Superbly creepy!

sarahferraro
Sarah Ferraro sarahferraro — ** spoiler alert ** Now that I sit to write the review, I realize there's an Italian movie very similar to part of the plot here. Michelangelo Antonioni has a film on a small island where the person disappears, and the whole movie they look for her, but eventually give up and go home. About 20 minutes in, they've nearly forgotten her already. So this has a strong relevance to this book that I didn't see before, but this book is about more than that, just like the movie is. Likewise, I didn't realize I'd already read the short story that was incorporated into the plot for this novel. So, that is another instance where I get a sort-of deja vu effect from reading it. Some of his strongest material is found here including the first time any homoerotic content between girls is included, which is often his most memorable and strongest writing, like in Norwegian Wood. Well, all of his works echo all of the others, but this one seemed to be especially prone to that. I also adored--was captivated-- by the woman trapped in the ferris wheel. If I remember correctly, she also had the same reaction as the girl in Norwegian Wood, needing to make love the first time in order to decide she'd never want to be touched like that again. I don't quite recall the man in her room enough to elaborate any more than that, though. That said, I always looked at this and assumed it'd be some sort of 1950's space race saga, involving romances between Japan and Russia. Doesn't he include the 1960s in most of his other works? So this led me far from what I first expected when I began it.

Alice Das _lice_as_eves — I loved this book. I thought the characters and plot were very well developed, as well as the symbolism of the oleander running throughout!

Viktor Qiu rammsteinc10b5 — A great story but the chapters just felt too small for me. However, that could be explained by the fact that this a book for young adults, which I am not. I loved the quick humor and LOL'd many times. The book held enough of an interest for me that I sought out the 2nd in the series (The Gift) and am reading it now. :-)
