Sarah Ferraro sarahferraro — 8 Best Books for Young Adults--non-fiction I enjoyed this book very much! This is an autobiography about a man named Jack Gantos who has dreams of becoming a writer. He loves to read and he longs to put his ideas on paper for all to read. However, because he grew up in an economically rough environment, he doesn't have the means to go to college. He doesn't have money nor the grades to pursue his dream. Finally, just as he was getting ready to work for his dad he was approached with opportunity to make $10,000 but, in order to make that money he had to help transport hash to New York and then sell it to the eager buyers. Jack is almost done with this and he is relieved to be over with it, but he ends up getting caught and having to do time in prison. He is able to make the best of the situation and gets through his sentence working with the medical staff. He writes down his thoughts in prison and upon release he is able to find a place to stay, a job, and the opportunity to start over. I think this is a great book especially for teens. It is a great book to discuss the difference between healthy and unhealthy risks. It will allow teens to have the opportunity to talk about the consequences of tough decisions. It may be difficult to sell this book because it is a true life story and because the plot may be unrelateable to some and a situation that many teens might think to themselves, 'this could never happen to me'. So, to help promote it I would have to really bring the audience in by asking them some tough questions about they would do. I think it is very believable because it is a true story and hopefully will be taken more seriously than a book like this that is fiction. 5Q 4P J,S, A

Mari Paadik _ari_aadik — A positively inspirational, educational book. I even really liked the second section about logotherapy. I think this ranks among one of the best books I've ever read and I feel like I have been changed for the better for reading it, as well as having some good things to think about.

Kumar D qumar — It's been a while since I've read a Wharton novel, but this made me want to make a stack of all the others I haven't read (along with those I have) and stay put for the summer, polishing them off one by one. When I read "The Emperor's Children" in summer '05, I immediately felt that Messud had to have studied (and loved) Wharton's manner of observing the worlds of New York society. "The Custom of the Country" is a biting, brilliant book of the social aspirations of one Undine Spragg of Apex, NY. Paris Hilton would be smart to get the cliff notes for this one. As I read the novel, I was continually surprised by how contemporary it felt. Not only by the writing, but also at how things really have not changed. There will always be people with their sights on the next best thing and the best way to go about attaining it. A fascinating commentary on the United States at that point in its history (Undine Spragg = US) and an all-out scathing read.
