This was great. It is the history of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Such a beautifully written account of the ugly face of extreme poverty. I cried so much when I read this book. You really felt like you were right with the narrator through every unfortunate event in his life. I love this book.

This is an extremely readable history of some of the earliest European settlements in Australia told via the life stories of various characters from the past and present. From the 'father of Tasmania' (and, it seems, complete crook) Anthony Fenn Kemp to the supposedly "Tasmanian-born British actress" Merle Oberon, the stories are linked and interspersed with author Nicholas Shakespeare's own story in Tasmania. He tries to satisfy himself with answers to questions such as "was Truganini really the last Tasmanian Aborigine" and "how likely is it that the elusive Tasmanian Tiger or Thylacine still exists"? This book if full of myths, legends and true stories about this amazing part of the country. I especially loved Ivy and Maud, the two elderly sisters who had only left their farm 7 times in their lifetime, and the furthest they had been was 70km on the train to Launceston! A wonderful read.

The beginning is pretty common sense for anyone interested in living a more green lifestyle.

I started reading this but couldn't get into it. I hear mixed reviews, so I bet I'll pick it up at some other point.

This was good, because the chracters were familiar. However, it was just random stories, changing time frames. The anecdotes were interesting, but there was no real story line.

Molly Murphy is a detective in New York City at the turn of the century who is hired to trace the family of a supposed orphan. However, when her client's friends begin dying in rapid succession, Molly is determined to prove that it's not simply influenza that killed them but something more devious. Reading this book was an odd experience. I found the writing itself to be self-conscious and clunky. I figured out "whodunnit" by the halfway point. Yet I couldn't put it down. Perhaps it was the author's incorporation of ideas like the suffrage movement and the relatively primitive status of medicine in the early 20th century. Or perhaps it was just the kind of quick, light read I needed. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a brain candy novel. But if you insist on fluid, eloquent writing and plot twists, this isn't your kind of mystery.
