I have to confess . . . . I purchased this book right after it's release and read two chapters. I set it down because it just didn't engage me as I had hoped. I NEVER do that. Never. But this time I did, who knows why. Two years later, someone in my book club selected it for our September read. I opened it again and read the whole thing. It was one of the most charming books I've ever read. I thought a lot about the characters long after I set the book down. To those of you who haven't read this -- do, you will love it. And just in case you get a little worried in the first hour of reading, keep going. It's so worth it.

In my opinion, this was my favorite book of the Maximum Ride series. It was so full of adventure, and it really pulled you into the book.

Promise Canyon by Robyn Carr is the story of vet tech Clay Tahoma, originally from Flagstaff and the Navaho Nation and Lilly Yazhi, a Hopi who is trying to forget her traditional native background. She works for her grandfather (“Yaz”) keeping books at his feed store and delivering feed to nearby ranchers and Nate, the local vet where Clay has come to work. Both have baggage. Divorced, Clay has left the Los Angeles area and his beautiful, wealthy ex-wife and the stable where he worked to put distance between himself and her, also to have a suitable place in which to raise his seventeen-year-old son, Gabe, who still lives with Clay’s grandparents on the Navaho Nation. Lilly hasn’t recovered from a romantic disaster where she was betrayed and abandoned at a much-too-early age. She’s spent the intervening years getting an education and putting her heritage behind her, and she’s not about to become involved with a drop-dead sexy Navaho. Fate has other plans, however, and both Clay and Lilly feel a huge attraction toward each other. Finding an injured and abandoned horse provides Lilly with a turning point, and she begins to enjoy working with the horses at Nate’s, and to realize how much she belongs with them. Meanwhile, in Virgin River, Jack, the owner of the town’s only bar and eatery, has been given the task of administrating Hope McCrea’s trust, which the recently deceased widow left to the community. As people come out of the woodwork with suggestions on how the funds should be used, Jack finds himself becoming increasingly unpopular as he tries to do what is best for the community as a whole. And Colin, Luke and Aiden Riordan’s brother, finds himself in a helicopter accident with dire consequences. Three stories mesh together and bring old and new faces to Virgin River. I love the way Ms. Carr is able to weave the plots together. This is a wonderful book with different storylines, each of them tied to Virgin River and her great cast of characters.

The second book in this series was even better than the first. Ms. Riley outdid herself with this one.

This is perhaps my favorite Graham Greene novel, and Graham Greene is one of my favorite writers. One thing I love about this book is its dynamic, multi-layered quality. One can read this book as a pulp, gangster novel that simply relates the struggle of a small time crook, Pinkie, facing the threat of being taken over by the infamous mob boss, Colleoni. Or one can read it as something much more complex - a story making sense of a new stage of capitalist, industrial experience where the urban cityscape is transforming into something more alienating and perverse than anything experienced in the 19th century. Greene communicates this by way of content (the struggle big business vs. small business) and by way of form (fragmentation of narrative, multiple perspective, linguistic experimentation...). Also, it's fun to read this text next to Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. Both works represent deviant youth in the urban enviroment; however, the two authors have radically opposing takes on what "causes" youth violence in the modern city existence (Greene being a "liberal" while Burgess is the neo-con).

Orphaned at a young age and heir to a vast fortune, Catherine de' Medici was one of the wealthiest young women in 16th century Europe. But that did not make her childhood happy. For her own protection, she was kept locked in her home or secluded in a convent for most of her early years. After three years at the convent, she is finally set free, only to learn she is to be married to Henri II, prince of France, in a political union. Married at the young age of fourteen, Catherine’s marriage is not happy. Her husband is not interested in her, preferring his much older mistress. Catherine knows that in order to secure her future, she must produce a male heir. In order to survive in the world she must live in, she determines she will her skill and cunning to outwit, out scheme, and outlast her enemies, shaping her future as one of the most powerful and feared queens in history. Although Catherine de' Medici is not the most likeable of historical figures - she was known as a cruel and manipulative queen who ruthlessly eliminated her enemies - author Carolyn Meyer manages to make her a sympathetic young woman in this novel, telling of the events that helped shape her later character. I highly recommend this novel to teen readers who love historical fiction. It is a very fascinating look at a famous queen who is not often written about in young adult fiction.

I read this while also engaging Heidegger's Being and Time for the first time. This is a great "philosophical biography." One can read this for the brute biographical facts of Heidegger's life, but the text investigates much more as well. Safranski offers a great explication of Heidegger's general project in terms that both the lay-man and the advanced student might appreciate. Safranski also paints a vivid portrait of German intellectual culture just prior to the rise of the 3rd Reich. There is good commentary on Husserl, Weber (as well as others) and on how their thought relates to that of Heidegger. Also, check out Safranski's bio on Nietzsche (not as good but still worth the read...).
