It is a good book -- well written - just a sad topic and it was hard to finish.

My daughter loves these books. I find it hard to keep all the cats straight. Good for kids.

Although this book is part of "The Great Discoveries Series," described in the foreword as "pop technical writing," sometimes (most of the time) this book is about David Foster Wallace as much as by him. I get the joke. Infinite Jest -> a history of infinity and we'll call a work of Wallace's 'compact.' See, funny. Actually, it's an interesting subject, and Wallace did yeoman's work, but man, this is a tough read. And I had some of the math in college (long ago). This book was probably marketed to two groups 1) fans of Wallace and 2) fans of popular math/science. Each group would find something to make their eyes glaze over. I wonder how large is the intersection of the two groups who actually finished the book. I enjoyed reading the book, but know no one with whom I would discuss it. Nor anyone I might recommend it to.

I don't read poetry. This book of poetry is excellent.

The second and final book of "Don Quixote" earns the same overall rating as the first, but with some different pros and cons. I do consider this to be a sequel to the first "Don Quixote" rather than merely a continuation--it was published ten years after Part I, it has different themes, supporting characters, and story arc. The characterizations are stronger in this volume, both of the leading characters Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, and of supporting characters as well. The book gets a bit deeper and more philosophical in some respects, and has less of the slapstick humor for which "Don Quixote" is famous. The idea that the first volume of "Don Quixote" exists and is widely read among characters in the second book is a nice trick, and enables some interesting and amusing situations. However, Cervantes made a grave error in introducing the spurious, unauthorized second part of Don Quixote into his own second part (backstory: while Cervantes was working on his sequel to "Don Quixote," someone else published their own continuation of the Quixote story, which Cervantes evidently considered inferior and insulting). Cervantes' views on this impostor "Don Quixote" book begin to dominate the final chapters of his own work, a decision which detrimentally affected the book's quality and inadvertently brought his rival's novel a good deal more fame and attention over time than it otherwise was likely to have received.

Whoa. What WOULD happen if society did take a turn for the better? Levithan is a master at writing utopian societies.

Well written, but a little depressing.

I have never liked Catherine Coulter. I tried her once, I can't even remember which book it was and I couldn't finish it because I thought she tried too hard. I don't know. I distinctly remember one FBI agent telling another the basics of serial killers - male, 25 - 35, white, etc. And I just thought it was too obvious, like FBI agents wouldn't be talking to each other casually about that stuff since they already know it. It was obvious she just wanted the reader to know it. BUT, I tried this one mostly because the audiobook is read by one of my favorite readers, Phil Gigante. I'll pretty much listen to almost anything by him. And, surprisingly I enjoyed the story. I really got into the characters, and am interested to know more about their lives. The mystery part was interesting, and thought i was able to guess some of it, there were still some surprises. Overall, a good book. And I'll probably try some of her others now.
