Suzan Verschraege suzanverschraege — So, I was a little late on the trend of reading this book, probably because I never really read what it was about or else I most likely would've been right there on the bandwagon reading another Sedaris-eque book that promised a messed up reality better than any fiction could provide. But I felt as though Burroughs pushes it a little further than Sedaris does, providing a dark glimpse not only into his life but also the effects it has on his mind. The novelty of the beyond belief strange characters that somehow all flock to Augusten is reason enough to read this book. I found myself laughing out loud many times at the descriptions of his mother's psychotic episodes, or the new crazies she brought home or into Augusten's life. The writing is so descriptive that the paranormal Doctor and his family really come to life. I felt sorry for, disgusted by, and probably the most scary is similarities with these characters all at the same time. I think this is a must read if your looking for something that delves into the world of suburban dementia.

Juul Weers juulweers26cb8 — I'm only going to review the last book of the series. I read this back in college, but I was utterly blown away. The best graphic novel series I've ever read. Sorry Watchmen fans. I can't wait to reread it someday soon.

Priscila López priscilalopez — I was excited to read this book because Klein is so highly reccomended by many authors I like (thomas Ligotti, Ramsey Campbell, etc.) but I was a little underwhelemed by these stories as works of terror. They are all intelligently written but forgettable and not particuluarly scary. The scariest story "Petey" comes accompanied with such a hamfisted attempt at satire that it is also the most difficult to get through. Klein has a social conscience that belies his stated intention to merely entertain the reader. He surrounds the horror in the story with a liberal modernistic philosophy and a journalistic style that is quite innovative but when it comes to the actual horror in the stories it is definitely of a trite creature feature style that feels a little contrived coming out of the 1980's.

Tim Wahl _oo_all — This is hands down one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. It reads like a novel and taught me what it takes to spread a message effectively.
