Blind, uncontrollable obsession haunts this book, but the bondage within is not the modern S&M connotations of the word- it is something much deeper and more sinister, a part of daily life.

** spoiler alert ** Despite thinking the title was “The Yiddish Policeman’s Credit Union” for the first chapter, I easily became immersed in this book. In the interest of full disclosure, I love mysteries and find almost all of them an easy read. I loved Landsman (our hero) and his dysfunction, Berko (the not-quite native/not-quite Yiddish cousin and partner), and the strong female characters of Ester-Malke, Bina, and the rebbe’s wife. A few things managed to pull my mind out of the story: trying to remember what different Yiddish words meant, men calling other men “sweetness” in a totally non-gay way, and an entire chapter dedicated to the past that kept the exact same narrative tone and style as the present tense of the novel. ***SPOILER ALERT*** The big flaws in the storytelling lie in the fact that Landsman is able to sober up, solve a murder, reunite with his estranged wife, and find redemption in the course of a week. Most of these items also happen in the final two chapters. I will forgive Chabon, though, for tying things up so neatly. The miraculous timeframe seems only fitting for a novel that centers around the death of a miracle worker.

This book was tough. It isn't anything like Beauty, which remains my favourite book by Robin Mckinley. It deals with painful issues, rape, incest, the loss of a child of rape, escape and eventually healing. It is beautifully written in a dreamy fashion. Wonderful.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. Nouwen describes his extended stay in a monastery and the struggles and discoveries that he encounters along the way. If you find yourself in a time of transition, in need of aloneness, or just a fresh perspective on the reality of your faith - this is your perfect companion.

While this book captures the John Cheever-type 1950's middle-class era quite well, I found the main premise, that the couple profiled in it were so much "better" than their neighbors who mindlessly embraced the conformity to the 1950's roles to be a bit trying at times. And the ending, which was a bit of a surprise, was too melodramatic and soap-opera-ish. Wonder if the movie was any better....

I read this because of reading Private Lives in my British Comedy class last year. I love reading plays, and Coward is very funny, though slightly cruel at times.

This is the second book I have ever read from the Project Gutenberg site, not counting the Librivox connection. The first one was Oliver Twist, which I chose because I had just watched the dramatisation on TV. Guess why I chose Emma? I really enjoyed the BBC adaptation, and it’s a story I was not even slightly aware of before I saw it. I don’t know how I would have got on with the story if I didn’t already have characters and faces in my head though, as I didn’t find them particularly strong. Emma is an unlikely heroine, and even Mr Knightley doesn’t come across in the book quite as well as you would hope a dashing costume drama gentleman would do. (This may also have to do with how crushable Jonny Lee Miller was.) Still, at least I can say I have read it now, and can go back to watching the programme without feeling guilty.

Joseph Cornell (from what little I know of him) was an eccentric loner in Queens who created meticulous gorgeous assemblage pieces that evoked magic, childhood, nature and the cosmos. I heard somewhere that Cornell insisted his pieces were installed at the viewing level of children, instead of adult height. I'm not sure if his intent was to actually make the works more accessable to kids (I doubt galleries would have humored this unconventional approach to art) or simply to make a statement. Either way, I love the sentiment and agree with it wholeheartedly.

An interesting take on how creepy a house can actually be... with romance. Yus. No, don't be fooled, this is awesomesauce.

They teach me about the mythical gods and how humans don't love each other, as much as they say they do.
