After having had the chance to meet George Hamilton at BEA last year, I was excited to read this book. He was so suave and handsome, and I've been a fan of his film "Love at First Bite" since it first came out. I even voted for him on "Dancing with the Stars." I figured his life story would be interesting, and I wasn't disappointed. Of course, there was lots of kiss and tell, but I was surprised at the variety of women he has dated, including Elizabeth Taylor and Danielle Steel. It was also interesting to see how he took his image from "young man born in the wrong time" to "preppy playboy" to "classic Hollywood star."

I am unimpressed with the moral character of both the princes and their women. They don't seem to have much to do except drink and carry on with the opposite sex. I don't know how the author could read the mind of these royals. He seemed to know how they thought and what they could be expected to do. At times he condemned their behavior but later made general over optimistic statements about their love and loyalty to each other. Hmm, I seem to be very judgmental. I was not impressed with their story.

Why bother trying to change anything since everything has already happened and will always happen? If you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich? Is a barbershop quartet any more or less harmful than a quartet of guards in smoke-filled Dresden? Is it so terrible to be stared at, observed curiously, if it doesn’t hurt? Is it possible to only remember the pleasant moments in life? Is there any difference between robbing someone of their dignity as an act of love versus as an act of war? Could I have taken this book any more seriously?

April book club selection. This is a fascinating, well-written autobiography. Qanta Ahmed, whose parents are Pakistani Muslims, grew up in London and trained at Harvard and other US schools to become an ER physician. She lost her US visa and spent 2 years in Saudi Arabia. Her descriptions of life there from her work in the hospital to her friendships to the difficulties of being a woman or a man in such a restrictive society are honest and compelling. I especially enjoyed her description of her spiritual journey as a Muslim, beginning when she made the hajj to Mecca. What we know about Islam from the media is a far cry from her insights into her faith.
