Ah, John John John. Some of the best and most affecting stories are told in short novels. This one was so well written and contained such a strong message, I wish you could give the same treatment to all of your novels, ("cough" East of Eden *cough**)... great as they are :-)

Really cool world these characters live in... so close to us, yet so otherworldly.

Similar to Devil Wears Prada. Chick-lit.

I really enjoyed this book at the start, but by the end I found it to be quite repetitive. I heard the author on This American Life, and got the book, not realizing that he was also featured in Freakonomics until I started reading. The author wrote this book about his experiences with the Black Kings gang of Chicago as he was conducting research for his dissertation. The life he described in the Robert Taylor projects of Chicago was pretty horrifying. I mean I knew it wasn't good, but there was just a lot that surprised me about the survival skills neccesary for the urban poor. The inner workings of the gang were really interesting to learn about, I guess I never knew how organized gangs are. It was an interesting read about something I know very little about.

The only thing I liked about this book were the snippets of information about life in Sydney back in the early days of settlement and how little the early settlers knew or wanted to know about the indigenous people. It dragged along like the a slow moving river, that might have been a better title.

One of the best books I ever read when I was growing up. The adventure the children go on was planned out so well, and was such an enticing adventure, that I was quite sorry that I didn't live near a train station so as to try it out myself. I believe I may have complained about this to my mom at the time. Made an EXCELLENT readaloud for 5th graders (would work for 4th graders) - after 2001, a discussion point about whether security would be the same or different became part of the readaloud.

Four stars for this kind of book. What kind of book? It's about a half-woman, half-bird performer named Fevvers in fin de siecle London with a cockney accent, in love, in prison, insane postmodern feminist fantasy. Not for the faint-hearated. Had to put that one out there.

See my other review of Alice books-- good books for girls; very Judy-Blume like.
