While Hyperbole and a Half does it better in terms of random, wacky humor, this collection of gags and odd facts from the humor website The Oatmeal is a perfectly agreeable way to spend a lunch hour. The comic titled "5 Reasons Pigs are More Awesome Than You" reminds readers that "pigs are ranked #4 in animal intelligence" (yup, higher than Princess and Fluffy) and will hopefully bring pause to all of those bacon-obsessed hipsters.

I like Poe's stories and certain of his poems, but "Philosophy of Furniture" is by far the best thing in here. I laughed, I cried, I discovered that "the Dutch have an indeterminate idea that a curtain is not a cabbage."

The story (which is in essence the narrator's day-to-day life) is told from the point of view of a boy who has autism...but isn't gimmicky or PC in the way that some books of similar topics have been. Very, very interesting. Definitely recommended for those who work with children or those who have an interest in autism or similar conditions.

** spoiler alert ** Dr. Muhammad Yunus provides excellent support to his thesis that the poor are not poor due to lack of effort but due to lack of financial credit. While I find it both remarkable and inspiring what small loans (micro-credit) can do I do not personally believe them to be the end all to eradicating poverty. However, Yunus has definitely made his point convincing in that most large aid organizations (World Bank, IMF, etc.) could not care less about those actually suffering the effects of poverty. Dr. Yunus is to be commended for utilizing the knowledge he gained in his ivory tower and actually turning economic theories to reality. Yunus excels in making his points by focusing both on a macrocosm of how his programs are effecting thousands (millions?) of citizens throuhgout the world, and also on integrating personal stories of the women who have benefited from the micro-loans the Grameen Bank offers. Yunus also does a good job in deliniating how the 'unorthodox', but highly practical, operations of the Grameen Bank, contribute to its great success. Clearly Dr. Yunus is committed to helping those less privileged and truly dedicated to making the world a better (and more livable) place. However, I must admit there are a few things I had trouble with when reading Banker to the Poor: *The last few chapters, while certainly necessary to include, seemed a bit rushed (though I suppose I probably would not have wanted to read a 400 page book) * While Yunus occasionally mentions the high interest Grameen requires of its borrowers, he fails to mention why exactly the interest is so high * Yunus is a bit too much 'anti-government' for my taste. His belief in the private sector is rather disturbing considering that Grameen received much of its seed money from government! * In the last chapter Yunus goes a little too far by stating that now that numerous societal ills, such as slavery, have been eliminated, it is time to work on eliminating poverty. Though one can agree that poverty must be taken seriously, to state that slavery has been eliminated in the world is clearly ignorant. * I was disappointed that Yunus did not admit that though micro-loans have the ability to lift millions of people out of poverty, today's new poor are the laid off workers of the world. And I do not think they're all about to start their own businesses! Micro-loans work for many- but let's not extrapolate the many to the 'all'.

I liked this book more than his famous Da Vinci Code. It was a good read and I really enjoyed learning more about the process of choosing a new pope.

I am so happy that more of her novels are getting translated! This is a beautiful portrait of the relationship of two women who are getting old. Under the stories of mundane moments, vacations, bad guests and learning new skills runs the theme of loving another person. I don't usually get moved my love stories, but this one was so unusual in its understated tone, and that the protagonists are both women, and that they are old, and have already spent their lives together before the book even starts. I read to myself and enjoyed it so much, that Jonathan and I then read it out loud to each other. Fresh blooming young love is played out everywhere. This, in its difference was a convincing and moving portrait of love.
