This short book mostly concerns Charles Dodgson's (Lewis Carroll) fascination with photography using the famous photo of Alice Liddell pictured on the cover as a starting point. As always with Winchester's books, the language is lyrical and at the same time erudite. The book is as much about the emergence of photography as an art form as anything else. Again, its 100 pages is chock-full of information on the controversy about Dodgson's relationship with Alice, Ina, the Liddell parents, the break in friendship, etc. I always learn a great deal of incidental background and trivia that sustains my interest (e.g., Alice's abnormally big feet). I always feel I am mentally stimulated when I read Winchester. It ends with a small chapter about the elderly Alice's trip to New York. All that said, the subject was a little less interesting than it might have been. I vacillated between two and three stars.

AHH! I was searching for this book. I couldn't remember the name of it, but it was one of my very favorite books when I was younger. I am going to have to track it down at the library and read it now. This was such a good book. It's all about a young girl of a settler's family who gets taken captive by Indians. She hates them and fears them but after living with them she learns their language and grows to respect their culture. Based upon the story of Arthur and Gwenhwyfar (Guinevere). Mercedes Lackey has been writing books for many years and it shows in this story. Nice plot with the appropriate good/evil combatants displayed. Some of the story wandered and I wouldn't say this is the author's best book so far but it was an enjoyable read and something different from one of my favorite authors.
