I love it when a book really makes you feel you are sitting next to the characters. Like Madame Bovary, Frederic needed to find something better to do with his time.

Wow, I love this kind of creativity. I think I would happily fall through the cracks and live in "London Below" or a "Belfast Below" for that matter and search out the bustling floating markets. Richard Mayhew is a very likable character, and starts off by passively going with the flow until an act of charity sees his life falling apart around him. So begins his journey, one that will keep you engrossed and not noticing the pages flick by. Will have to read again to take in the bits I'm sure I missed.

It's been awhile since I last read this, but now I'm wondering what everyone's fascination is with it. Who in their right mind would think it's a love story worth appreciating--Heathcliff and Catherine are so co-dependent and in time Heathcliff uses that co-dependence to make everyone around him suffer. I guess it's nice that at the end he let's young Catherine and Hareton love each other, but by then he had already accomplished all his desires as far as revenging himself on Hindley, Catherine Sr., and Edward (is that his name?). And rather than discover that the elder Linton no longer felt any kind of grudge, Heathcliff insisted on continuing in his original path--conceived when he was too young to make such long-term plans with any sort of understanding. He's just a jerk and I'm sorry he found peace at the end, but I guess he at least acknowledged that he wasn't worthy of heavenly peace. Which is convenient since he didn't believe in God anyway. I suppose that's what makes it such a classic. I don't know.
