Elliot isn’t too happy about moving to Spohrville, Nova Scotia, a small town best known for its annual eel festival. However, his father has a new job as doctor for the town, and his mother’s ship was lost at sea the year before, so there is nothing to keep them in their old town. Things don’t start too auspiciously in Spohrville. The coach bringing Elliot and his father to town gets stuck in the mud. While the coachman attempts to fix the problem, Elliot wanders away from the carriage and gets lost in the fog. There he sees a person who seems to be some sort of sleepwalker or zombie. Things get stranger as Elliot becomes more familiar with the town. It has seen many deaths recently. The entire population appears to sleepwalk at night. There is a thief who steals peoples’ watches and clocks. There is an evil professor type. Elliot befriends a girl, Paisley, who seems to be one of the few people besides him not affected by whatever mystery is causing the town to behave so strangely. Together, they begin to unravel the mystery. The book takes place in nineteenth century Nova Scotia. The author does a good job of creating the mood of the place and time, and of setting the scene. The book is full of little historic details that are really quite interesting. I found it a little slow going to begin with, but as the action picks up, the book becomes a real pageturner. It is the first in a series of mysteries, and thus ends with several questions unresolved. However, there is satisfaction in having most of the mystery brought to a pleasing conclusion. Like all mysteries of this sort, one wonders why the adults seem to be so obtuse. However, the interplay between the two appealing main characters makes up for this. Elliot and Paisley feel like real kids, and behave believably as they work on the mystery together. I recommend this mystery for teens who enjoy a gothic feeling read. It is quite dark, but not too scary at all. There will be more elements of the supernatural in the follow-up book, if the ending is any indication. The feel of the times described, and the mystery, is similar to the feel of Philip Pullman’s Sally Lockhart mysteries.
