Neal Ortenberg _eal_rtenberg — This is another book like Karen Chance's books; it's shelved with the romances, but it's anything but. The romance isn't a love-st-first-sight thing, thank god. There's plenty of sex for the protagonist, and it's not all with the same partner, which is unusual for romances. The sex is very well-written, the plot is twisty and fun, and the main character, Riley, is very likable. She's smart and tough, but she's not obnoxiously spunky. The "love" story, if it can be called that, is an aborted one, though I get the distinct feeling Quinn, the love/sex interest, will be back in later books.

Anthony J anthonyjfoti — So Stephanie Plum is a bail bondsman who is not particularly good at her job. Her life is kind of like an "I Love Lucy" episode but instead of a candy factory, think car bombs, house fires, and heads getting whacked off with a machete. If anything can go wrong it probably will. Stephanie is a likable character whose partner in crime/bailbonds is an ex-prostitute named Lula (her Ethel). The two of them get into all kinds of hijinx and frequetly need saving by either of Stephanie's love interests; the cop Morelli or the ex special-ops hunk Ranger. The book is a fun romp through Trenton's underbelly. Evanovich is definitely having fun herself with these books. Farting plays a key role! The mystery/crime is incidental, just a backdrop for another day in a the life of our heroine. Easy, breezy.

Sophie Colverson sophiecolvad76 — I read this when i was young and I hardly remember it.

Mikko Riihelä _ikko_iihela — This book is a modern take on the fairy-at-the-bottom-of-the-garden story - with the garden being concrete with weeds overlooking the local service station, while the fairies are in the hamburger and ice-cream business. The plot beyond this initial premise is a little thin, and the text isn't exactly rip-roaringly exciting. The cartoon-esque illustrations are clear and fun. When reading this aloud I couldn't help thinking of Jethro Gibbs from the TV show NCIS (even though this book was published before the character had made it to TV). This is one of the relatively rare cases that a book is eligible for multiple 'national' awards - it was eligible for the Children's Book Council of Australia Awards because Bob Graham is Australian, and it was eligible for the Kate Greenaway Medal because the book was first published in the UK, while Bob was working there. I'd always somehow considered the Kate Greenaway Medal more prestigious. I suppose I felt this because 1) the UK must produce more children's books than Australia (given the population), 2) it has a greater cash prize 3) receiving the award would almost certainly lead to a greater number of book purchases by schools and libraries and I suppose 4) a bit of cultural cringe. Thus it is interesting to note that this book only managed to make the Short List of the CBCA Picture Book of the Year, but managed to win the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Michele Armellini _arm_ip — Kaleb Nation is a fresh, funny voice in YA fiction. While his debut novel Bran Hambric: The Farfield Curse shares some elements with other series such as Harry Potter, it also manages to be unique and entertaining in its own right. The plot is engaging and (mostly) fast-paced, mixed in with hilarity, whimsy, and adventure. Bran is an interesting protagonist who is easy to care about, and his emotions and reactions are all quite believable and well-written. The majority of the supporting characters also added to the story skillfully, especially Adi, Rosie, and Astara. Sewey, and in fact all of the Wilomases, were especially hilarious. Nation definitely has a flair for humor! It was interesting to read about the different missivs and spells, and to discover Bran's past and what it meant for his future as he did so himself. I have a few small complaints about this book: the Farfield Curse itself played a smaller role in the story than the title would suggest; I would have liked to see more of some of the more villainous supporting characters; and it was a bit predictable; however, it still held my interest from beginning to end. I can't wait to read what Kaleb writes next! I'll definitely be checking out the next installment of Bran Hambric.

Lizzie Bang lizziebang — I was really looking for a "fluff" book after reading Hemingway for six months, and this book fit the bill. It was entertaining, predictable, and easy to read. Since that was essentially what I was looking for I really have no cause to complain. However, I will say there was an incorrect cultural reference towards the beginning of the book that left me a little irked...

Dev Zala _evzala — this book inspired me to see a fortune teller in thailand. the guy sucked. but then, i found him on the side of a road predominantly frequented by tourists, which probably isn't where all the wise sages hang out.
