Naresh Bindaas _indaas180 — I don't usually pick up novels written in poetry. The topic of this one was compelling, however, so I made an exception. Three teenagers are admitted to Aspen Springs psychological facility after attempting suicide. Each teen slowly opens up and shares the details of his or her life. All three have stories of abuse, guilt and neglect that they slowly share with each other, their doctors and the reader. Thin on plot until the end, this long volume relies heavily on character. Impulse received excellent professional reviews, but I'll admit that I was somewhat disappointed. The novel's strength is in the way it portrays these young people's bond. Hopkins, however, seems to have gone overboard with the number of problems she assigns to each of the teens. It gets to the point where it seems as if she is trying to make their decisions to end their lives seem justifiable. Each teen is a well balanced character, who readers will come to care about. Overall, a mixed bag.

Amelia Taylor amltyl0rd38a — I liked this book for what is was. That being a work of fiction. I read several reviews about people being offended by the way the maids were depicted in this book. Is this a great work of literature? No, but it is a wonderfully written book about women trying to make a positive change in their world.
