this series is like literary crack. it doesn't take long, it's really fun, and afterwards I feel a little guilty for having completed it. basically, this is a modern noir series where the protagonist is a vampire in new york city. this is several things I love in one book. deals with vampirism as a disease, politics of multiple vampire gangs that run manhattan, preventing the backlash of the general public finding out that vampires are real, etc. it's not rocket surgery, but I love it just the same.

I really enjoyed the strong female character in this book. She was tough, self-sufficient, and intelligent. A refreshing change from the "I am nothing without a boyfriend" characters that we usually see in this genre.

(A hint: it rhymes with schmucking sneaker factory.) p.65...she might just be the only person in my entire life about whom I’ve said something purposely, gratuitously injurious and deeply unkind. [a teaser, the comment is revealed at the end of the chapter] p. 70 I once almost let a friend board a transatlantic flight without telling her that she had unwittingly tucked her dress into the back of her panty hose. In the end I took pity on her, but for the brief period before I did, it was exquisite to watch her walk around that way. It turns out to be somewhat less so when it is your ass that’s poking out in the duty-free.

This book blew my mind away. A perfect example of a main character who is not entirely likable, yet the world that author Curtis Sittenfeld creates is vastly engaging. This book gets to the heart of many thing, locked away in adolescence, sex and class all through the eyes of an extremely vulnerable and insecure teenage girl.

One of the most well-written books I've read. While there is a plot that stretches to the last pages of the novel, this book is not plot-driven. I didn't rush through it but instead took my time to read every sentence, marking up many of them as I went because they touched me so. The language he uses to describe actions and emotions both huge and small in scale is so full of substance. Read it twice and loved it.
