I finally finished this book after reading it in fits and starts over the last month. I'd even made it to the last 15 pages - the final section - before leaving it home while I went to CA for two weeks. The book wasn't bad, but I'm not in love, either. There are four sections, each narrated by a different character, years apart... a dead teenager, her boyfriend (now an adult), his new girlfriend, and his father. The book tackles a lot of good topics (religion, human nature, school violence) but the writing style came off as somewhat forced, which each character's personality seeming to come more from the blatant narration style rather than the content. That said, after the first few pages of each section, it's easy to ignore and get down to the story. I felt the best portion was the last, so if you're having trouble staying committed to this book, push through it. It's worth small amount of time it takes to read. The first Coupland I've read, and while I'm not rushing out to read more, I haven't written him off... yet. Feel free to offer suggestions on his other books.

I can't decide if I like this book or not. It was recommended by a teacher who said their whole high school was reading it. I am a bit surprised that the school chose this book. Although it has a great message about how the little things we do can have far reaching affects, it also has a quite graphic sex scene near the end. Teen suicide is an important topic and this book does a great job of detailing how something so drastic can seem like a way out. I hope that those who read this book can see that this girl had so many other options. This book really made me think about the things I do and how they might affect those around me.

This is technically unfair, as I never once spoke to him or took one of his classes. I think it was the mustache that did it. It was a very intimidating mustache. Of course, none of this has anything to do with the book, which I loved. I just thought you'd like to know.

I classify this under 'close but no cigar'. The idea was good but the execution lacking and sloppy. I had a hard time keeping the characters apart for the first 50 or so pages. the middle was good and interesting, but by the end I lost my interest in the characters and felt it was overwrought and tear-jerky.

I completely disagree with the reviews stating that the first two acts of this play are the best. The language is clunky bereft of any real poetry. My opinion is aligned with that of Hallett Smith, (i.e. That Shakespeare merely edited the first two acts and vastly improved/rewrote the last three). It may be outlandish and difficult to stage, but God is in the details of this fantastical romance.
