Ballpark Mysteries #3: The L.A. Dodger by David A Kelly is a fun romp through Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium. The book follows Kate and her cousin Mike. They are in L.A. to visit Kate's dad, a scout for the Dodgers. But when they meet him at the airport, they quickly notice that something is not right. Her dad explains to them that mysterious things have been happening, and because of this he needs to keep a close eye on his scouting notes. Kate and Mike jump right into the mystery, trying to discover who the mysterious Dodger is and how they can stop him before her dad gets into any trouble at work. This is a great book for kids that love anything about baseball. The illustrations are fun and the book also includes some fun facts about Dodger Stadium in the back. I'm definitely going to share this book with my nephew--he'll love it. *Reviewer received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads

I thought this was one of the duller Sayers I've read. The mystery is undeniably much more complex and ingenious than in, say, Clouds of Witness (a sillier denouement I don't think I've ever read); but the mystery is also a slow and ponderous one to unravel. In some ways, even though more technically accomplished than Clouds of Witness, it was less fun to read, because I didn't find the supporting characters as entertaining, and because there really wasn't enough of Peter. Large chunks of the text followed the activities of the police inspector and so on, and there wasn't enough of Peter for him to really develop as a character at all. If this had been the first Heyer I'd read, I don't think I would have continued on with the rest of the books. It's a competent mystery, but nothing special. Oh, and the way she spells out the Ayrshire accent phonetically is also irritating - it's bad enough when Hagrid does so in the HP books; here, it just seems patronising.

The subtitle describes it pretty well..("the amazing true story of a young family, a broken down zoo and the wild animals that changed their lives forever") except that it doesn't mention that the young mother is diagnosed with a brain tumor right in the midst of the purchase of the zoo. Written by the husband--and first time zoo director--this is an amazing story of triumph on all sorts of levels. An added enjoyment were the animal "factoids" that surprised me. Who knew that tigers have sensors to detect a victim's pulse in their two front canine teeth so that their lethal bite on the back of the neck will be successful?! It was also fascinating to learn about the "behind the scenes" activities and legal requirements connected to running a zoo!
