Maria Luisa mle976 — The plot was interesting, and kept my interest until the end. The foreshadowing was really subtle; I remember thinking early on: “Oh, something about that Mysterious Group is going to be what solves this Mysterious Happening that is central to the plot” and then completely forgetting about the Mysterious Group and being carried along by the story, until - ta-dah! - Mysterious Group pops up again, and lo, they do indeed partially explain the Mysterious Happening. I kept comparing it to other things (mostly LOTR and Stargate) but the comparisons weren’t in the vein of “look how this guy is ripping off episode 34!” but rather “it’s kind of like episode 34 where they do that thing, but not really.” Oh, so you want to know about the plot? Okay, here goes. Elantris is a magical city in the midst of a fairly normal world. The people who inhabit Elantris are super-human; they are smarter, stronger and faster than regular people and they look differently too, with white hair and glowing skin. But the Elantrians were originally regular people. They are transformed into Elantrians by an instantaneous process called the “Sheod” that strikes without warning, usually while the person is asleep. Elantris had been doing its magical-city-thing for a long while, then suddenly, the city stopped being magical. The Elantrians became crippled, pain-wracked beings who were a shadow of their former selves. And all the lands around fell into chaos. Ten years later, people are still being transformed, but it’s a terrible curse rather than a blessing. And when it happens to the beloved crown prince of the country of Arelon, then the story begins. The novel has a lot of fascinating plots. There’s the mystery (why did Elantris suddenly stop being so awesome?), and there’s political intrigue in the country of Arelon, some religious zealots who are trying to convert everybody, and a little bit of romance thrown in. But it’s not hard to keep straight, and it all ties up pretty neatly in the end, and not in that Deus Ex Machina so common in lesser stories. The one aspect about the book that I didn’t like was the languages. Sanderson came up with a lot of interesting names for places, people and magicks, but many of them are very similar sounding, and it’s easy to get confused, especially with the more minor characters. But this is really the only criticism that I can make. I can wholeheartedly recommend Elantris to you, especially if you like fantasy. Give it a try!

Abel Muñoz abel_hibera9e6 — This was a funny little book from Sophie Kinsella. If you love her (as I do) and enjoy British chick-lit (as I do again), I think it is a good choice.

Lui Maeda omitl — Although it started with a painful series of stories and images of the difficulties Wright had with his paramour Miriam, and she is a terrible creature, the book picked up speed and depth as I continued and indeed this is a compelling remarkable insightful heart wrenching story of the women in Wright's life. Not about him, not much about their feelings, not much about the challenges of living such an extraordinary life -- but a story worth of the wonderful storyteller -- Boyle -- and rich in detail and wonder about how the genius of Wright was influenced by the chaos and adventure in his personal life.

Brenda Evelyn _renda_velyn — There is no "them" just individuals. This Studs Terkel book only took me a little over a year to read, far faster than the four years it took me to read Working. Reading this book is like having a discussion with 88 different people about race, racism, prejudice, and bigotry. Maybe it is more like listening in on someone's dinnertable conversation, if we could sit down with each other and listen. A conversation that we should partake in and continue. "I believe in my bones that the things that separate us make up one percent of who we are, that ninety-nine percent of our lives are similar. The same planet supports us. We have the same environment. You have two arms and legs and I have the same. We have given so much over the years to that one percent, complexion, it's a travesty. I think it's one of the great tragedies of our species." -Charles Johnson Many of the people interviewed say that progress was being made from the sixties into the seventies, but then there was a subtle, but important, shift in the national attitude towards race when Reagan was elected. Suddenly not caring about race was acceptable, this was not caring in the sense of not doing anything about the problems that have been created by our prejudices.
