Audio book I have found that I can't listen to "real" literature while I'm cleaning, etc. My solution is to listen to books like this one. I can follow them without paying too much attention, and still get some work done. Nothing exceptional, just a murder/mystery...

I'm reading THE ANABASIS as research for the novel I'm writing. It's surprisingly engaging for such a dusty and ancient work. I'm about half done. So far, I recommend it for anyone interested in classical history, the Persian Empire, Hoplite warfare, or in my case what it's like to traverse a large desert in the bronze age while surrounded by angry people with murder on their minds.

Graphic. Full of texture. Truthful in a way that sucks, and by that I mean that Lauren Oliver is a genius. Her character, Sam, says a lot about herself in the raw statements she makes about her world. The more she pulls back from that reality, however, the more she learns about her part in the big picture. It did take a pretty drastic event to get her attention, however, and the lessons she learns and the sacrifices she makes show the depth of her transformation. There were not so great situations in this book, but they were not gratuitous... every word had a purpose.

Found this in a used book store and enjoyed it more than The Ivy Tree. Interesting suspenseful read that has you guessing which characters are "good guys." Make that guessing on some characters -- some are pretty obvious :) Good for a light read.

I know very little about Hemingway, and what I do know I picked up in tidbits from articles or other books. I've never read any of his novels, somehow having made it through high school without the usual 'Old Man and the Sea' read. Based on this book alone, I think he was a jerk. I loved the story, loved reading about Paris in the 1920s. I was fascinated with Hadley and with her life with Hemingway, but I can't quite understand why she stayed with him for so long. She says that her reward is knowing that he couldn't be the brilliant writer he is without her, but that isn't true, as he went on to write many books after they divorced. I'm still wondering what it was that she got out of the relationship.
