The High Road is a follow-up to one of my favourite reads in recent memory, The Best Laid Plans. I hesitate to call it a sequel, because it's basically a direct continuation of its predecessor. It picks up almost exactly where The Best Laid Plans left off, and apart a few bits of exposition designed to bring new readers up to speed, one could probably simply staple the two manuscripts together and they would flow seamlessly. That said, I can't say I enjoyed Road quite as much as Plans. I think certain things that didn't bother me in the first book started to annoy me when they were extended to a second. The characterization is really pretty thin, for one, bordering on caricature. Everyone is cleanly divided up into "good" and "bad" camps, with the "bad" people seeming almost cartoonish in both their evilness and lack of intelligence. Also, Fallis comes off as a bit more preachy in this one, pretty clearly using his characters as a mouthpiece for his views on a specific issue. The biggest problem I think, though, is that nothing ever goes wrong. At pretty much every step along the way, pretty much everything works out for the main characters, and there's never even a sense that things would ever not work out. This worked fine in the first book for me; I saw it as a feel-good story. But after a while all the perfect perfectness starts to become just a tad unsatisfying. Some hardship might be nice. I'm being too harsh. I really did like the book. Everything that made the first book great is still there: it's idealistic, hopeful, funny, and well-written. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time reading it. It's just not a book that challenges you as a reader.

the main thing which sticks out to me about this book (apart from the culture shock-ness of 70s China, sounding more like the turn of the 20th century until we are given some dates and clues further on in the novel) is that nobody is perfect. in fact, hardly any of the characters are likeable - not that you find yourself disliking them too much either. Lin, the main character, is very weak willed and lives a dispassionate life - however, he goes through a lot with respect to his different partners and ultimately follows through, which has to be respected. Plus, even though you are irritated with him until the last page, that page redeems him to an extent. Won't spoil it ;) Manna begins as a voice of passion and reason, but after such a long wait for her love, she has changed irreversibly through the effects of some events and the absence of others. Lin finds himself with someone quite different to the woman he originally met, though glimmers of her still shine through. It is, I am guessing, a realistic portrait of how we change through adulthood. I did feel sorry for Shuyu, since although she was a very simple character, at the end her constant love and affection won me over. I was pleased that her life did manage to improve, and her simple honesty was warm. Ultimately, the book painted a realistic (but slightly flat and dispassionate) portrait of how love is not all it's cracked up to be, and living up to expectations is often impossible.
