didada
秋 地 didada — The human race is exctinct, and its virus-induced demise is "written" about by the distant, fur-seal-like evolutionary descendant of the human race, who's ghost is actually that of one of humanity's last survivors.

blurry
Raluca țurcanașu blurry — There's definitely a lot more books nowadays that deal with faeries, but this is probably one of the best ones out there. A definite plot that's evident from the start of the story, believable characters, and quotes from renowned fairy books make this novel one of my favorites that I never get tired of reading.

esraahofy
Esraa Hofy esraahofy — I'm afraid I didn't enjoy this as much as The Red Siren. While I loved reading about Hope's journey to become a "real lady", Nathaniel's judgemental attitude really annoyed me and he only truly redeemed himself at the end of the novel. The spiritual aspect of this book was very heavy, and at times even I, a born-again Christian who adores Christian fiction, found it forced and preachy. And for some reason, despite all the adventures the characters found themselves partaking in, the middle of the novel really seemed to drag. I still enjoyed this book but I kept comparing it to its predecessor and it just didn't live up to it. 7/10

Asaad Shah _ohammad_saad_hah — Great book presenting a balanced case, at least compared to the overly 'high-level' country strategy papers. Perhaps of most clear use, the book highlights some mistakes that occupying forces continually make but doesn't suggest any workable solutions to delivering limited and pragmatic intervention targets for domestic (home country) political consumption (and neither can I!)

saramcbeen
Sara Mcbeen saramcbeen — The best thing about this book is that it is short. So short, in fact, that it didn't even last me a whole day's worth of commuting on the bus. This is supposedly a fantastical version of the relatively recent history of Cambodia. Yes, this was a bad time in history so you might expect this to be an unpleasant story, but everything was made worse here. I found this to be deeply disturbing and unsettling. I don't even want to describe the grossness in this story. I spent the whole book thinking "Ugh!" and counting how many pages were left until I was done. If I had had anything else with me to entertain me on the bus, I might not have finished this book.

Lucio Correia luciosalva0f80 — The High Road is a follow-up to one of my favourite reads in recent memory, The Best Laid Plans. I hesitate to call it a sequel, because it's basically a direct continuation of its predecessor. It picks up almost exactly where The Best Laid Plans left off, and apart a few bits of exposition designed to bring new readers up to speed, one could probably simply staple the two manuscripts together and they would flow seamlessly. That said, I can't say I enjoyed Road quite as much as Plans. I think certain things that didn't bother me in the first book started to annoy me when they were extended to a second. The characterization is really pretty thin, for one, bordering on caricature. Everyone is cleanly divided up into "good" and "bad" camps, with the "bad" people seeming almost cartoonish in both their evilness and lack of intelligence. Also, Fallis comes off as a bit more preachy in this one, pretty clearly using his characters as a mouthpiece for his views on a specific issue. The biggest problem I think, though, is that nothing ever goes wrong. At pretty much every step along the way, pretty much everything works out for the main characters, and there's never even a sense that things would ever not work out. This worked fine in the first book for me; I saw it as a feel-good story. But after a while all the perfect perfectness starts to become just a tad unsatisfying. Some hardship might be nice. I'm being too harsh. I really did like the book. Everything that made the first book great is still there: it's idealistic, hopeful, funny, and well-written. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time reading it. It's just not a book that challenges you as a reader.
