Gritty Southern Gothic where the lines between reality, supernatural, and mental illness blur.

The backstory on this book is just as dramatic as the novel. Irene Nemirovsky (a Russian Jewish emigre to France who eventually converted to Catholicism)was an accomplished writer in pre-WWII France. She wrote this book (two novelettes of a planned 5 books) during the Nazi-occupation of France. Irene was ultimately arrested because of her Jewish ancestry and died in Auchswitz. Her young daughters saved their mother's manuscripts but didn't read them until relatively recently! Suite Francaise was published in France a few years ago to great acclaim. The book offers an honest but not too generous view of the French. Make sure to read the appendices to this book. In any case, the first book recalls the exodus of the general populus from Paris as the Germans advance. The author tells the story from many points of view: snooty upperclass families and artists, middle class workers, a young boy, a priest. Really touching and detailed evocation of the time. How did the author synthesize this all so quickly? The second piece, Dolce, takes place in a small town in occupied France. The local French people struggle to maintain their apartness from the German soldiers but some inevitably develop close relationships. Are they collaborators? Or just human? The books could use the hand of a good editor but the author's story is too compelling to quibble about this.

I can't stop thinking about this book for all of it's haunting images and the intracacies. It has grown on me so much after reading it multiple times. Amazing stuff.

This non-fiction book really does read like a novel. The author really did his research. This would be a wonderful book for readers who say they don’t like non-fiction. I’ve always loved World Fairs; I have wonderful memories from the first one I attended: New York in 1964. I’m sure that’s part of why I found this book so fascinating; it was fun to read about a World’s Fair and its creation behind the scenes. That, and I learned so much else, especially about Chicago history. There’s a lot about general Chicago history, including the stockyards slaughtering neighborhood, the history of the making of the “White City” 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, which is about half the book, the other half being about the serial killer that murdered in that time & place, and was able to get victims more easily because of the making of the fair and the fair once it opened. (As a vegan, I noticed I made a connection between the stockyards & the victims of the serial killer.) Anyway, the whole book was sufficiently eerie & creepy that it read like a thriller. And it was also a very interesting study of human psychology, not the serial killer and his victims as much as the people who built the fair; it’s a fascinating story.

Funny and well written. Very conversational.
