_and_esigns
Randy Rattansingh _and_esigns — Sophie Kinsella has such a fun style of writing. I never get tired of her. This was a cute story with great flow and fantastic characters. I held my breath until the very end and did a little dance in the car when it finished the way I'd hoped. Lots of laugh out loud moments and a few moral lessons tucked here and there.

Evandro Stefano _vandro_tefano — I had begun and stoppped reading this book several times before now. Glad I finished. Safran Foer structures the book somewhat disjointedly. Readers of his fiction won't find that strange, but for a non-fiction book that is (at least on some level) making an argument that he hopes will convince others... it seemed a little strange. On to the content, though. The book could be retitled "The Case Against Factory Farming," and in this he succeeds with all pistons firing. It seems hard to me to see how the case can be made to support such practices, and the fact that I have personally been able to ignore or forget a lot of it says something about how disconnected I am (dare I say 'we'?) from the systems and the processes and the industries that produce food. I liked that Safran Foer isn't afraid to complicate the argument. This book isn't just a straightforward slam-dunk case for veganism, though following certain parts to their logical conclusions might be such. The alternatives to factory farming that he highlights are so small-scale that it's hard to see how they are anything outside interesting edge and exception cases. Also, the fact that the practices of the US meat industry (where many of the commonplace practices were begun) are now spreading to other parts of the world -- China, India and Europe -- makes the bits of the book about factory farming the most important, I felt. To me, a lot of it came down to this quote: "Whether we’re talking about fish species, pigs, or some other eaten animal, is such suffering the most important thing in the world? Obviously not. But that’s not the question. Is it more important than sushi, bacon, or chicken nuggets? That’s the question." Safran Foer -- in an attempt to make the book readable, I'm guessing -- leaves out a bunch of side issues relating to our eating animals, most notably things relating to human labour and the environment, but it's tough to write books and this one already does a lot.

Alexandra Savelieva evasavel — Pure entertainment and not too much more... kept me reading, but predictable and a little "historical romance" at times, although it sells itself as 'historical mystery". Plenty entertaining for a rainy day though.

aditinona
Aditi Malhotra aditinona — I didn't quite love this one as much as I did Gaudy Night, but I do think it runs a close second for the title of my favourite among the Wimsey books. As in GN, the murder aspect to the story is quite intelligent and well thought out; the romantic/relationship part of the novel does overshadow it, though. In my opinion, I think quite rightly. The earlier books in the series are quite passable in an Agatha Christie-ish sort of way, but it's not until Peter meets Harriet that the books really begin to spark. Their relationship is really quite wonderful - neither of them are perfect, of course, but they are as close to perfect for one another as you are ever liable to get. BH, I think, continued the process of letting us see much more of Peter's personality, as well; the ending was really heartbreaking, but also hopeful. The wordplay and use of literary and classical allusion is also great fun. Well, it is if you're a geek *g*
