This book was terrific. I can't say enough good things about it. All Quiet on the Western Front is a German soldier's account of his time on the Western front during World War I. He describes his experiences on the front, when just behind the front (by the middle of the war, Germans were rotating soldiers in and out of the front every few weeks, usually), his time on leave and in the hospital. This is a work of fiction, although the author did serve as a German soldier during World War I. I first started this book sometime in high school and quickly put it down. I started it again in law school--same thing. I started it again last week... and could hardly put it down until I'd finished. This time was different for two reasons: 1. I'm older and, hopefully, more empathetic--better able to take in the magnitude of what the hell he's talking about. 2. I know a lot more about World War I and I can put the book in context now. To be honest, I think this is a lousy book for a high schooler to read. This book is really fantastic, and I just don't think anyone (or almost anyone) (who is also a civilian) has the capacity to read this book and really understand it unless they are at least, say, 23-25 years old, probably older. And if you try to read this book, but you don't have the depth of experience, knowledge, and context in which to understand it, you're both wasting your time and probably developing a terrible opinion of a fantastic book. What makes this book great is that it gives a vivid, searing vision of what World War I was like in the trenches, a first-person perspective. You can hear the explosions and feel the earth and imagine the hellish landscape constantly surrounding you. You feel the impotent rage against the system that impelled you to this on a macro level and the rage against the system that on a micro level commits daily injustices and horrific acts against each soldier, in the form of nurses, doctors, cooks, and superior officers. You can understand how the macabre humor develops as a sheer survival mechanism. So the trouble is, if you don't know anything about the First World War, this is not the place to learn. If, however, you could maybe write a page on the First World War from memory alone, this is a great book to read, because it will only enhance your understanding. I chose to read this book because I've been listening to Dan Carlin's podcast series on the First World War. This was the perfect time to read it... and I made my husband, also a virgin to this book, promise to read it around the time of the next release of a podcast in that series.
