I'll start by saying I really enjoyed the format, which switched back and forth between mysteries in 2010 and 1901. The author did a great job of tying themes together. I really liked the way he used the characters to somewhat explain why a Sherlock Holmes mystery is appealing to the audience. I also enjoyed how the book, through the characters, explained how a Holmes story would use unexpected twists, then used some decent twists itself. I often find myself wishing Goodreads had 1/2 stars. If so, I would have been conflicted about whether to rate this 3.5 or 4 stars. It took me a good 100 pages to really get me to finish this book alone and without the interruption of picking up other books. I think part of the problem was that the main character seemed fairly bland. Once I got about a 1/3 of the way through, I did want to read straight through. I thought there were some leaps in solving the mystery that weren't really connected, and without wanting to spoil anything, I'll just say I felt a little uneasy about how one of the mysteries ended.
