Karen Lundquist karenmpls — I have read pretty widely on the Holocaust, and this is probably my favorite book on the subject. Elie Wiesel tells it like it was in the camps, but he adds some humanity. For the first time, when I read this book, I was able to see the individual suffering that occurred, rather than the suffering of the whole. The individual suffering is a lot more poignant for me. The symbolism and the descriptions alone make the book worth reading.

Salem Seed ww2014ww14485d — This book changed my life. My dad, sick of hearing me make fun of his spy novel proclivities, bet me $50 that I would love this book. It was a safe bet, too. If I loved it, I owed him nothing other than the smug satisfaction of having been right. If I hated it, he'd give me $50. I loved it. I love the entire trilogy, in fact, but since I read this one first, out of order (tsk tsk dad) it has the special place on my favorites shelf. And even though I now own THREE copies, this edition was my father's, which he then bequeathed to me after I raced through the entire Le Carre canon with incredible enthusiasm. He always meant to inscribe this edition to me, but he passed away before we had the chance. It's perhaps the most treasured book I own because it was his.

Michael Metz mwm8180 — I'll start by saying I really enjoyed the format, which switched back and forth between mysteries in 2010 and 1901. The author did a great job of tying themes together. I really liked the way he used the characters to somewhat explain why a Sherlock Holmes mystery is appealing to the audience. I also enjoyed how the book, through the characters, explained how a Holmes story would use unexpected twists, then used some decent twists itself. I often find myself wishing Goodreads had 1/2 stars. If so, I would have been conflicted about whether to rate this 3.5 or 4 stars. It took me a good 100 pages to really get me to finish this book alone and without the interruption of picking up other books. I think part of the problem was that the main character seemed fairly bland. Once I got about a 1/3 of the way through, I did want to read straight through. I thought there were some leaps in solving the mystery that weren't really connected, and without wanting to spoil anything, I'll just say I felt a little uneasy about how one of the mysteries ended.
