I'm giving two stars instead of three because I can't say I "liked" this book. It doesn't mean it wasn't well-written but I personally have a hard time spending days immersing myself in very depressing circumstances. I know tragedy exists but I want to see human beings find a more positive or transformative way to deal with it. I've always had a bit of a hard time dealing with what I can see as self-destructive behavior. And I am not a pollyanna.... I can imagine this book could appeal to people who are really struggling with some form of tragedy that has led to feelings of shame, but like a previous reviewer, I would not recommend this book to anyone.

This book was pretty much about dealing with life during the death of a family member. It was quite sad at parts, but funny and uplifting at others. It gives you lots of things to think about, and even though I've read other books about the same subject that I liked better, I still enjoyed this one. I liked the characters, and I liked reading about Mira's interactions with her friends and family members, even though I thought they were a little bit unrealistic at times. I think younger readers would enjoy this book alot.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this first volume, but I'm going to go ahead and give this a good rating. "Mars" is your typical shojo manga (man, I have been saying that way too often) but there's something about it that doesn't make me want to drive a thousand knives through each and every single page. Firstly, I fell in love with the art. I was highly reminded of Satomi Ikezawa's art (Othello and Guru Guru Pon-Chan). The male leads both look shockingly familiar, in looks anyway. I'm guessing a lot of males in the 90s had that particular type of hairstyle? The concept of it makes me laugh. Anyway. Yes, a lot of the art was great to look at. I usually don't like the 90s style but it was definitely fitting. Secondly, even if I've seen the plot many times before, this is a whole entire different story. There's just so much angst and I love it (I've been running low on the angst lately)! Although I can picture what will happen in the end, I have no idea what will happen from point A to point B. Besides, it's the journey that counts, not the destination. Thirdly, the characters had me hooked from the beginning. Well, mostly Rei. I could not stand Kira at first since she was just too much, but as the book progressed, I think she really grew. But, Rei is still my favourite. He seems like a simple character, but he's very complex and just so interesting to read about. I don't really care what happens to Kira, as long as Rei is happy in the end! So far, I'm loving the series. I'm going to have to buy every single volume now.

I actually didn't finish this one, but I feel like I read enough to be satiated. I read the entire final chapter and about 70 pages in, plus Gordon read me excerpts throughout the time that he was reading it. This baby is pretty extreme, but I'm glad I cracked it because it got me thinking about peak oil. it just furthered my local agriculture fervor..

the book is well written and the idea of it has so much potential but the author paints hadley as such a bland character. i don't think i'd feel as if i were missing out too much if i'd skipped this one and stuck with 'a moveable feast' instead.
