What I liked: Rather than just recycle material from his Dishwasher zines, Jordan puts together a cohesive history of ten years of meandering travels and dishwashing adventures. His writing is funny and easy to read, although it does get a little repetitive at times and some of his digressions into dishwashing history didn't keep my attention. What I didn't like: Jordan ends his attempt to wash dishes at a Cracker Barrel in South Carolina. He sees some customers entering/exiting the restaurant and refers to them as a "lard-ass", "pigs", and a "fatty clan". I know people will tell me I'm being oversensitive and taking this out of context, but when I first read this passage, I thought, "Oh my god, Pete Jordan stopped washing dishes because of fat people." He felt so disgusted by the sight of fat people, he just couldn't handle the thought of washing their dishes. Wow.

This entire series is fantastic, especially the original (and parallel series about Bean that begins with "Ender's Shadow"). The series gets more science-y and politically sophisticated as it goes on. Definitely a great read, even for those who don't consider themselves sci-fi fans. :)

my second read from jean cocteau's oeuvre, i am beginning to develop a love/hate relationship with his writing style, punctuating scenes from the novel with poetic metaphors that lend some truth to his character's sensibilites. these 'interruptions' only work when when you have experienced or actually have knowledge of what he is referring to in his metaphors. it makes you more in tune with his character's way of thinking. but i find that most of them are lost on me as this book is dated and what worked then to readers of that period probably has no effect now. in addition, these metaphors tend to break the narrative, making it a bit tiresome for me to get back in the right mind frame to continue where we had left off. all in all, i enjoyed this book of young jacques forestier,who got swept up in a passionate love affair with germaine the chorus girl, that was essentially 'doomed from the start'.

Willis Traynor buys the local paper and it becomes a money maker and he becomes a "local" and the black woman he befriends because her family makes for a great column -- all SEVEN of her kids have doctorates! She becomes the first black juror in Ford County. Great Story, quick, shoot'em up ending with a great twist.
