absoluke
Luke Weng absoluke — This book is also the story of the hero and spokesman for the miners, James B. McLachlan, a miner blacklisted for union activities in Scotland and in Cape Breton as well. He was a union organizer and secretary-treasurer of the United Mine-workers of Nova Scotia and its successors, a Communist Party member for a while in the twenties and later a supporter of the CCF. His is the only human story that emerges from the book. If you think Cape Breton is a depressed area now, you must read this description of it in the first thirty years of this century. The coal miners toiled for fourteen-hour days, for a pittance in wages, lived in company-owned houses, were members of a company-controlled union, studied in company-financed schools, walked on company-built streets, used company-controlled water and electricity, called on the services of company-paid doctors, and shopped on credit at the company store. The cost of all these services was deducted from their weekly pay envelope, so they were always in debt to the company. And the company, from BESCO to DOSCO, did not love its workers. This was no paternalistic, community-based corporation dedicated to small profits and the well-being of the people it employed; this was a multinational corporation, headquartered in Montreal, profiteering during World War I and demanding their employees take pay cuts in the 1920s. There were seven strikes between 1904 and 1925, none of which won any notable concessions and most of which were ended by a combination of goon squads, a weak and company-influenced provincial government, a biased judicial system, a treacherous union (the United Mineworkers of America, led by John L. Lewis), a cold Cape Breton winter, destitution, privation, and starvation.

Balint Hamvas cyclephotos — My first true Jane Austen, and it was unforgettable! I love the entire setting from the relationships to the quaint English countryside. As always the heroine, Elizabeth, is strong, determined, and very headstrong! All of the relationships between her and her sister, and between her and Mr. Darcy are true and beautifully crafted. I love these books, especially with the adorable sketches! Jane Austen is truly an amazing author who's eloquent words keep impacting many throughout the decades.

Cardosonot Antonio cardosonota226 — ** spoiler alert ** A month ago the whole 10th grade was assigned a book Of Mice and Men. I had previously heard about it cause my cousins had read it last year. I didn’t know much about the book but I herd it was good which made me eager to it. Of mice and men was about two men named Lennie and George whose dreams are to buy a house with land and animals. Of mice and men was one of the saddest books. When I read this book I wanted to cry. I would definitely say this book was a let down because I thought that the ending was going to be sweet and everything was going to end well but in fact it broke my heart I loved the book but hated the ending. I wish it would end differently because it would have been an away better book. Through out the book Lennie Geroge are always together. Lennie is the one who causes all the problems and George is the one who saves him from getting in trouble. Lennie never listens to George when he says stay out, so that causes them to always have to run away from the trouble Lennie causes or they will be killed. If it wasn’t for Lennie being so forget full and f he listened to what George said then they would have been able to fulfill their dream and get that house with the animals. The book definitely would have been better. Overall the book was great and I could relate to it because I am always looking out for my friend. I thought that the book overall was excellent but I’m still going to stay strong on the ending. If it was a different ending then I would of loved the book but because of the ending and so many deaths in the book it made me upset and mad. But overall I loved the book and its concept.

Nwankwo Chike futuristoc5a56 — I read this the year after spending a summer in Italy, and it really brought back all of the sights and smells and tastes. Additionally, it gave me an historical context for some of the things I had seen the previous summer.
