李 家希 coco12356712ba — rec: um, oprah? read for the june booksmith bookclub I called kelly about 50 pages into this to apologize to her for giving this book to her for Christmas because, sure she likes the post-apocolyptic stuff, but dude. Depressing barely covers it. And she said it didn't get any more uplifting. There was a lot about the book that I didn't like-- I wasn't wild about the lack of quotation marks and contractions. The "man," "boy," and "he" thing works fine when the two of them are alone, but any time they came into contact with someone else, it got kind of confusing. Which may have been by intent-- it was certainly chaotic for the characters. Stil, it was occasionally difficult to read. And the story just kind of droned on and was vaguely repetitive. I was pretty sure I didn't like the book. But, I suppose the fact that I couldn't decide was telling enough and in retrospect, I think I loved it. The creepy scenes were really creepy and I'm kind of in love with that little kid as a character. Also, SPOILERS TO FOLLOW... So, I spent the ENTIRE book waiting for the inevitable ending where the man had to shoot his son with the one bullet to save him from the roving hordes of cannibals, so I was pleasantly surprised by the actual ending. Which, I actually think was a bit uplifting. I totally started bawling like a baby and kept doing so for several minutes after finishing, but still-- I like the idea that the kid got what his dad wanted for him, that there is hope that life can be better than death. It's a lesson I admit hoping is true most days. And I think that all along I was waiting for the end to decide how I felt about it and since it was the non-predictable ending that hit me emotionally, I went towards love.
