NOTE: This book has been on my currently-reading shelf for quite some time. The reason is complicated and admittedly silly. Describing it in much detail I fear would require revealing more of my schizophrenic thought process than I am comfortable with. So, here is my single sentence excuse: I endowed this book, after a cursory scan at the store, with more authority than perhaps it warranted and, therefore, became dissappointed midway through. That being said, I have attempted to make this short review as objective as possible. If I were professor of a photography class made for art students who are not studying to be photographers, this is the book I would choose as the main text. It touches on every aspect of photography; history, design principles, forms, exposure, equipment, how to think about photography, how to write about photography, and on and on. It is by no means specific and by every means exhaustive. There are even suggested exercises to help you grasp the concepts within. What I valued most were the images accompanied by artist's statement or relevant commentary. The author did a great job choosing talented artists from amongst both canon and the vast population of under appreciated photographers. I felt exposed to works that I otherwise would have missed. What I valued least was the chapter on photographic history because the images had little or nothing to do with the text. Although, as the book moves along images become more and more relevant to the chapter. Frankly, I thought a book that focused on both the technical and the creative was rare and potentially very insightful. It was instead too general which made it very tedious to pick out the few gems of useful information and ignore parts already known to me.

Wow, what an amazing book! Hopefully, I won't have to wait long to read the following 2 books in this series! Picking up this book I had no idea what to expect. When I read the first page I was immediately intrigued! Even though the book is less than 190 pages, so much happens in the book that I am truly amazed that Megg Jensen was able to create and deliver such a compelling book in so few pages. While reading, I was so focused on anticipating what would happen next that I couldn’t put the book down until I was finished, which was about 1:30am. And when I finally put it down, I was determined to write something even though I was so delirious from lack of sleep. And this is what I wrote, “What an amazing book! I am too tired to write a review at the moment so I will be doing it in the morning. This is a good one! Very compelling, there are some twists and you don't know who to trust. Very good!” The emotions I felt from reading this book ranged from excitement to intensity to shock and then to frustration! There is very little detail about the story that I would want to include in this review because I loved that I read it completely blind and I want all readers to experience the same emotions I did. I do want to say that one particular person more than disgusted me! I wanted to jump through the book and strangle them (I won’t say him or her to ruin it for you). Anyways, I would highly recommend this book!

Absolutely a fun read, an biography of a medium. Good read, but found it lacked any earthshaking insight.

Weird story. Very weird. How they organize their lifestyles is so.. controlling. And no color! How can they stand it?! But, I am curious as to what happened to Jonas.. Will be reading the sequel soon..

Fix is hired for what figures will be a pretty routine exorcism but it soon turns into a how fast can you dodge bullets and succubi kind of challenge. This is a funny paranormal mystery well worth reading.

This is a fantastic series and this ninth book is no exception. Incredibly well written, the characters and time period literally enter your drawing room; you can almost smell the smoke from Holmes' pipe. Sometimes with long series you grow tired of the characters and the drama... but not with this one. King finds a way to create incredible depth of character and atmosphere with precise words that keep the story moving forward until 2:00am at least, which is how late I stayed up last night to finish it. :)

This book is a compilation of short stories by Robert Bloch and Ray Bradbury. I haven't read Bloch before, and know only that he is the author of Psycho. I picked this book up as part of my Ray Bradbury reading project. It's interesting to see Bradbury's work juxtaposed next to that of another writer, because it reminds you just how good Bradbury really is. The Bradbury stories used here ("The Watchers," "Fever Dream," "The Dead Man" and "The Handler") aren't his best material, but they still blow the Bloch material out of the water, IMHO. In fairness, Bloch is more attuned to the macabre and the occult and that has never been my cup of tea. But in stories such as "Mannikins of Horror" and "The Druidic Doom," Bloch also displays a penchant for purple prose. What Bloch seems to have forgotten (or perhaps never learned) is that sometimes less is more. The creep factor in Bradbury stories rarely comes from Egyptian curses or vengeful werewolves, it comes from everyday people and things (e.g. a buzzing fly or a young boy's fever) which suddenly take on ominous proportions in his brief sketches. With simple understated language, Bradbury builds from the known to the unknown, and is so doing creates true dread. Bloch's grand flourishes are over the top and frankly, a little boring.

It's amazing to me the things this little boy has seen and experienced. Anyone who would question Heaven after reading this book, needs to re-read it again!
